Is the Software Developer Job Dead?
Not Quite.
You may have heard that AI has ended the software developer job. The facts show a more mixed picture.
Job openings are growing. One June 2026 count found software engineer job listings up 30% with 67,000+ open roles. Software developers also still have by far the most job openings of the major roles in tech, according to a January 2026 job market report.
But the jobs are not equal. The market is deeply bifurcated, which means experienced engineers and specialists do well, while beginners and general coders face much more competition. Experts say a senior developer who knows how to direct AI tools is significantly more valuable than one who does not, and companies are hiring fewer beginners as a result.
AI skills are now expected almost everywhere. One source reports that AI skills appear in 42% of software job descriptions, up from 8% in 2022.
The picture is also not all good. There were layoffs in 2025 and 2026, and the market is more selective than it was a few years ago.
In plain terms, the role is not disappearing, but getting in is harder. People who do best usually have real projects, comfort with AI tools, and a specialty such as cloud, security, or data. Beginners should expect a longer search and more competition.
