Many doctors and healthcare staff are dedicating a significant portion of their week to managing administrative duties. A recent study conducted by Google Cloud in collaboration with the Harris Poll highlights the substantial impact these tasks have on the healthcare workforce. The study also expresses hope that generative AI could alleviate these administrative pressures on medical professionals and their support teams, thereby not only easing bureaucratic challenges but also enhancing employee retention. This report was released by Google Cloud earlier today. https://buff.ly/4hTCIIi

On Wednesday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced their plan to overhaul the State Performance Standards System (SPSS) for the 2025 fiscal year. This revision will involve dropping two measures from the previous year, incorporating a new one, and revising several others. A notable new addition to the SPSS, which is the federal agency’s tool for assessing State Survey Agencies, is a measure in the Survey and Intake Quality section: the Nursing Home Recertification Survey Deficiency Citation and Tasks Investigated. This measure will evaluate the frequency and nature of nursing home deficiencies and the completion of required or initiated tasks during recertification surveys. https://buff.ly/3YALX8M

Over the past four years, hospital labor expenses have surged, impacting profit margins and cash flow, according to Moody's. This trend is expected to continue. Moody's report highlights the structural challenge of rising healthcare wages, which pose a credit risk for hospitals. Although wage growth will moderate by 2025, average pay will surpass past levels. Reimbursement increases, especially from government payors, will not match wage increases. The median operating cash flow margin for nonprofit hospitals dropped from 8.5% in 2019 to 5.3% in 2023. Rising labor and supply costs, with salaries and benefits comprising 53% and supply costs 21% of expenses, drive this shift. https://buff.ly/4e3LoZo

Hospital labor costs rocketed over the last four years, hitting margins and cash flow hard, according to Moody's. And the problem isn't going away any time soon.

A recent study questions the effectiveness of the Medicare Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM) in reducing "upcoding" behaviors in nursing facilities. Researchers from the University of Rochester and the University of Texas at Austin conducted a seven-year analysis, identifying exploitation patterns that impact resident care. The study, yet to undergo peer review, faced criticism from the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). https://buff.ly/48fZmpK

Behavioral response teams (BRTs) are vital for improving employee wellness and workplace morale in healthcare, as highlighted at the 38th American Psychiatric Nurses Association conference in October 2024. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased violence against medical staff, leading hospitals to adopt BRTs. Researchers from St. Louis Children’s Hospital reviewed literature on BRTs and behavioral emergency response teams (BERTs) in hospitals, evaluating their effectiveness in reducing violence. https://buff.ly/4f2xWFL

A $2 million grant has been allocated to a Pittsburgh organization to address nursing home staff shortages by training nearly 600 certified nursing assistants by 2027. This joint effort between Pennsylvania's nursing facilities and the Service Employees International Union aims to strengthen the long-term care workforce. The Appalachian Regional Commission funded the Jewish Healthcare Foundation to start this initiative, which is timely given Pennsylvania's severe nursing shortage. https://buff.ly/3Vlehde

A study in the American Journal of Infection Control shows that insufficient staffing for infection prevention increases healthcare-acquired infections. A new online tool offers tailored staffing advice, moving away from the traditional bed-based staffing model. Researchers assessed 390 hospitals, considering factors like emergency departments and specialized units, and found 79.2% were understaffed in infection control, using a baseline of one full-time infection preventionist per 85 beds. https://buff.ly/49ng8Eg

The nursing home sector is experiencing a significant shortage of healthcare workers and a slower increase in nursing care beds, raising concerns about long-term care access in some states. In Wisconsin, Forward Analytics warns of a looming crisis, predicting a need for 10,000 more workers by 2040 as baby boomers age. This is due to changes in service types and a 50% reduction in licensed nursing home beds over the past 20 years. https://buff.ly/3Ns8PRh
