Today, I am speaking with a couple who decided they didn’t want to keep waiting for “someday” to begin traveling. They have been full-time RVing for five years.

Donny Benedict spent his career in furniture retail management, while his wife, Tammy, was a teacher.

They started RVing about eight years ago and even lived in their RV for three years while Tammy was still teaching. When she retired, they were finally free to embrace full-time travel and Workamping.

Because they retired in their 50s, Workamping offered a way to stretch their budget while seeing parts of the country they had always wanted to explore.

They have worked for a large resort in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, at a retail position near Traverse City, MI, and, most recently, at a small, family-owned campground in Maine.

Tammy typically works in the office handling reservations and checking in guests. Donny spends more time outside escorting campers to their sites, cleaning facilities, helping with the pool, and handling light maintenance.

Along the way, they also developed a strategy for finding positions that allow them to explore new places without feeling like they are simply working another full-time job.

For Rebel and Wendy Miner, Workamping has provided a way to earn an income while pursuing the adventures that drew them to life on the road in the first place.

After RVing off and on for about 25 years and traveling as full-time RVers for nine, the Miners have built a lifestyle around exploring remote places, searching for gold, rockhounding and seeing what might be waiting at the end of an unfamiliar road.

Rebel said his journey began when he grew tired of the repetitive routine of working a conventional job, coming home and doing it all over again the next day.

He initially envisioned supporting himself by mining gold. When he discovered that was not particularly realistic, Workamping provided another option.

Today, the couple owns 13 gold claims and two crystal claims. They continue prospecting during their travels while using Workamping jobs to provide dependable income and support their adventures.

REMINDER: Update your Workamping resume once you accept a job!

One of our Employer members' frustrations is contacting Workampers who are not actually available even though their resume says they are available.

Please be sure to keep your resume up-to-date! You can use the Situations Wanted section of our Resume Builder to indicate your availability for one or more time frames. Make a Situations Wanted entry inactive if you've accepted a position for the time frame you listed.

Or, toggle to hide your resume from the database if you'd rather not entertain future opportunities.

Edit or create your resume via the Resume Builder tool when logged in at Workamper.com.

Workampers who utilize our Resume Builder can have their resume working for them 24/7/365! Instead of posting to social media and having your resume post buried within a few hours or days, build your resume once and then update it as-needed to keep it in front of an invested employer audience.

WORKAMPING FAQ:
Q: My domicile is a state with no income tax. If I work in a state that does have income tax, would I owe taxes to that state?

A: If you physically work in another state and receive a W-2, then you need to file a tax return for that state and possibly owe taxes to that state.

For example, you work over the summer camp hosting in Colorado and receive a weekly paycheck. You’ll get a W-2 from your employer and will need to file a Colorado state income tax return. Depending on how much was withheld for taxes and how much you earned will determine if you owe more taxes or will receive a refund.

Today, I’m talking with a couple who made a remarkably quick transition from a conventional life in Missouri to living and traveling full-time in a converted school bus.

Susan Savage worked 29 years as a social worker, while Tad Mayfield worked primarily in the printing industry. Susan had already retired, but Tad was still working long hours to maintain their lifestyle when they realized they wanted something different.

The inspiration came while they were driving down a highway in Missouri and spotted a woman happily cruising along in a converted school bus. Susan told Tad she could live with him in a skoolie, and he agreed.

They went home, crunched the numbers, and called a realtor the next day. Within 31 days, their house, cars and most of their possessions were gone. They didn’t even own a school bus yet.

After finding a partially converted bus in Tennessee, they spent a couple of months getting it ready and hit the road. About six months later, while camping in Iowa, they were approached about becoming camp hosts.

They didn’t even know what camp hosting was at the time. But they gave it a try, enjoyed the experience, and discovered there was an entire world of Workamping opportunities available to them.
