Weโ€™ve had a few candidates accept new opportunities with our clients recently.

The candidates that we work with are not job hoppers. The majority of them are (or were) where they thought they should be.

So, itโ€™s normal for them to feel so many emotions, especially negative ones such as sadness, guilt, and fear.

Think about itโ€ฆ You could be leaving people that you have grown to really enjoy being around. You may feel like you are abandoning your team or leaving projects unfinished. You might even be anxious about the change itself.

All of this is normal. You are leaving behind the familiar for something new!

Letโ€™s be honest. Unless the decision to leave your company is made for you, it has to be well thought out. Leaving one job to pursue another can be a bittersweet time in your career.

But there is so much to look forward to when you accept thatโ€ฆ You are doing what is best for YOU, your career, and your family. You arenโ€™t leaving anyone high and dry. Once you realize that the resignation is the scariest part, youโ€™ll be relieved that you can focus on moving forward. And itโ€™s okay to celebrate the fact that you are doing the right thing. Youโ€™ve worked so hard to get to this point in your career and deserve to go after your goals.

While itโ€™s true that we have a job to do for our clients, we actually care about the bigger picture โ€“ to also match our candidates with โ€œtheโ€ role they deserve.

The best reward comes when we are able to share stronger opportunities --- opportunities that change lives, and this doesnโ€™t happen without really, really getting to know people (this is the best part of the job)!

I donโ€™t doubt this happens (and it sucks because it gives the industry a bad name), but not all recruiters operate this way. We know the importance of providing feedback, whether good or bad, to maintain a mutually respectful relationship.

Yeahโ€ฆ I can honestly say having never been an Engineer that I donโ€™t know Engineering like a skilled Engineer would. What I do know would surprise you though, including things that the candidates or hiring managers donโ€™t know.

Essentially, some donโ€™t think we have an impact on whether they get hired. Yes, we are the middle man, but trust me when I say that my clients rely on me to help them prepare an acceptable offer that will win their chosen candidate!

Thereโ€™s no denying that candidates will occasionally have a negative experience with a recruiter, but more often than not, the skepticism comes down to a simple lack of understanding about what we actually do.

As recruiters, we are often told โ€œnot interestedโ€. Most prospects or candidates tell us how happy they are with their current situation. Some even go so far as to say they are planning to retire with their current employer.

But did you know that your loyalty might not be reciprocated? Not because your employer doesnโ€™t like you, but because when it comes right down to it, everyone is expendable.

In all but one state, employment is on an โ€œat willโ€ basis.

This means that in most states, you can be released from your job at any time, for any reason, without notice or explanation.

Regardless of how satisfied you are with your work, or your employer is with you, your long-term goals may be at risk.

So, what do you do?

โžก๏ธEven if you love your job and company, keep your resume updated.

โžก๏ธCreate a short list of employers with a reputation for employee longevity.

โžก๏ธPursue continued learning opportunities and develop โ€œhotโ€ skills.

โžก๏ธBuild relationships, including with recruiters, who can help you network.

โžก๏ธBe loyal to yourself first by being open to hearing about opportunities.

We saw it happen just last month when an entire Detailing office was deemed unnecessary. 12 highly skilled PEMB industry professionals were left without employment, without warning.

Instead of โ€œnot interestedโ€, why not be open to learning about other opportunities when they surface?

Control what you canโ€ฆ your attitude and effort!

I think good recruiters are curious and persistent by nature. I also think itโ€™s in our DNA to not give up.

Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s so hard to give up on a candidate that has so much potential to do great things, to do more, that told us they want moreโ€ฆ

But when candidates donโ€™t do what they say they are going to do, we must give up. We must move on.

I meanโ€ฆ the soup canโ€™t be hotter than the pot, right?

But also, for me, itโ€™s a matter of integrity. What does it say about someone that doesnโ€™t keep their word?

Itโ€™s also about trust and reliability. Fact is, I donโ€™t trust people that donโ€™t keep their word. And, if someone letโ€™s me down multiple times, then they have proven to be unreliable.

Just as important, itโ€™s about respect.

Hey, I understand that things come up, that there may be a good reason they didnโ€™t do what they said they would. Stuff happens, but โ€œstuffโ€ can work out when communicated.

In the end, you are what you do, not what you say you will do.
