We’ve had a few candidates accept new opportunities with our clients recently.

The candidates that we work with are not job hoppers. The majority of them are (or were) where they thought they should be.

So, it’s normal for them to feel so many emotions, especially negative ones such as sadness, guilt, and fear.

Think about it… You could be leaving people that you have grown to really enjoy being around. You may feel like you are abandoning your team or leaving projects unfinished. You might even be anxious about the change itself.

All of this is normal. You are leaving behind the familiar for something new!

Let’s be honest. Unless the decision to leave your company is made for you, it has to be well thought out. Leaving one job to pursue another can be a bittersweet time in your career.

But there is so much to look forward to when you accept that… You are doing what is best for YOU, your career, and your family. You aren’t leaving anyone high and dry. Once you realize that the resignation is the scariest part, you’ll be relieved that you can focus on moving forward. And it’s okay to celebrate the fact that you are doing the right thing. You’ve worked so hard to get to this point in your career and deserve to go after your goals.

How do you prepare for and ask the right questions during a job interview?

➡️Be specific and relevant
➡️Adapt to the situation
➡️Ask open-ended questions

Asking questions during an interview is not only a way to show your interest and enthusiasm, but also a way to demonstrate your research and knowledge of the industry!

Working with a recruiter can open new and exciting doors! So, how come people are skeptical about working with recruiters?

𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙬𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚. While it’s true that we have a job to do for our clients, we actually care about the bigger picture – to also match our candidates with “the” role they deserve.

𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣’𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜-𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙢. It doesn’t make sense to “sell” the wrong opportunity to candidates one time and if they don’t bite, dismiss them. The best reward comes when we are able to share stronger opportunities --- opportunities that change lives, and this doesn’t happen without really, really getting to know people (this is the best part of the job)!

𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙜𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨. I don’t doubt this happens (and it sucks because it gives the industry a bad name), but not all recruiters operate this way. We know the importance of providing feedback, whether good or bad, to maintain a mutually respectful relationship.

𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙬𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙙𝙤. Yeah… I can honestly say having never been an Engineer that I don’t know Engineering like a skilled Engineer would. What I do know would surprise you though, including things that the candidates or hiring managers don’t know.

𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣’𝙩 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣. Essentially, some don’t think we have an impact on whether they get hired. Yes, we are the middle man, but trust me when I say that my clients rely on me to help them prepare an acceptable offer that will win their chosen candidate!

There’s no denying that candidates will occasionally have a negative experience with a recruiter, but more often than not, the skepticism comes down to a simple lack of understanding about what we actually do.

As recruiters, we are often told “not interested”. Most prospects or candidates tell us how happy they are with their current situation. Some even go so far as to say they are planning to retire with their current employer.

But did you know that your loyalty might not be reciprocated? Not because your employer doesn’t like you, but because when it comes right down to it, everyone is expendable.

In all but one state, employment is on an “at will” basis.

This means that in most states, you can be released from your job at any time, for any reason, without notice or explanation.

Regardless of how satisfied you are with your work, or your employer is with you, your long-term goals may be at risk.

So, what do you do?

➡️Even if you love your job and company, keep your resume updated.

➡️Create a short list of employers with a reputation for employee longevity.

➡️Pursue continued learning opportunities and develop “hot” skills.

➡️Build relationships, including with recruiters, who can help you network.

➡️Be loyal to yourself first by being open to hearing about opportunities.

We saw it happen just last month when an entire Detailing office was deemed unnecessary. 12 highly skilled PEMB industry professionals were left without employment, without warning.

Instead of “not interested”, why not be open to learning about other opportunities when they surface?

Control what you can… your attitude and effort!

I think good recruiters are curious and persistent by nature. I also think it’s in our DNA to not give up.

That’s why it’s so hard to give up on a candidate that has so much potential to do great things, to do more, that told us they want more…

But when candidates don’t do what they say they are going to do, we must give up. We must move on.

I mean… the soup can’t be hotter than the pot, right?

But also, for me, it’s a matter of integrity. What does it say about someone that doesn’t keep their word?

It’s also about trust and reliability. Fact is, I don’t trust people that don’t keep their word. And, if someone let’s me down multiple times, then they have proven to be unreliable.

Just as important, it’s about respect.

Hey, I understand that things come up, that there may be a good reason they didn’t do what they said they would. Stuff happens, but “stuff” can work out when communicated.

In the end, you are what you do, not what you say you will do.
