The Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced that it will hold an e-bike buyback event on September 13th, offering between $200 and $1,000 for each qualifying e-bike, no questions asked. The program is modeled after gun buyback programs and is part of a broader crackdown on increasingly serious e-bike incidents across Southern California.

The move comes after a summer marked by police pursuits, street takeovers and fatal crashes involving e-bikes and e-motorcycles. Officials have been particularly focused on powerful electric bikes used by young riders, some of which can travel faster than police vehicles.

The issue isn't limited to Orange County. A UC San Diego study cited by the Times found that between 2018 and 2024, e-bike riders were involved in at least 4,035 collisions in California, with riders experiencing more severe injuries than those involved in traditional bicycle crashes. Many of those injured were 14 or younger.

Orange County's buyback is scheduled for September 13, and the first 75 people who turn in cycles will also receive two Los Angeles Angels tickets. The program will accept e-bikes, gas pocket bikes and e-scooters, with funding coming from asset forfeiture funds.

One of the most common misconceptions we hear is, "I have a will, so my family won't have any problems."

It's thinking you already have one.
