Doris Miller was born in Waco, Texas and enlisted in the US Navy in 1939. After his training in Virginia, he was promoted to Mess Attendant Third Class, which was one of the few rankings for black sailors at the time.

But he was a fighter, being the heavyweight champion of the battleship West Virginia. His greatest fight came at Pearl Harbor of 1941. With his strength he helped his injured captain and and manned an artillery gun, learning how fire it on the spot! He also helped move his injured comrades-in-arms, "unquestionably saving the lives of a number of people who might otherwise have been lost."

Doris Miller would be recognized as one of the first US heroes in World War II, and inspire thousands of men then, and in the future. He was awarded with the Navy Cross by Admiral Nimitz.

We remember all who served and still serve for our country on this Veteran's Day.
