Looking to make your resume stand out? Here are the 7 key sections you should include, in the best order to catch an employer’s eye!
Your resume’s layout shows what you’re all about, so it’s worth putting some thought into the order. While you can tweak things based on your experience, the main sections should follow this flow:
1️⃣ Header — Your name, and if it fits, your professional credentials (like John Doe, CPA). Keep it simple and relevant.
2️⃣ Contact Info — Your phone number, email, location, and maybe links to your LinkedIn or portfolio if it’s helpful.
3️⃣ Summary or Objective — A quick snapshot of your skills, experience, and what you’re looking for. Use a summary if you’ve got work history; go with an objective if you’re just starting out or switching careers.
4️⃣ Work Experience — List your jobs in reverse order, starting with the most recent. Focus on what you achieved, not just what you did—show how you made an impact.
5️⃣ Education — Your degrees and schools. You can leave out the graduation year if it’s been a while, but include relevant coursework or honors if you’re a recent grad.
6️⃣ Skills — Highlight your top skills that match the role, especially keywords that applicant tracking systems are looking for.
7️⃣ Optional Sections — Certifications, big projects, volunteer work—add these if they help tell your story or show off extra skills.
