All Star Career Services

All Star Career Services Career Coaching, Resume Writing, LinkedIn Profiles, Personal Branding Did you know that the majority of applicants don’t rehearse AT ALL for interviews?

🥇As Cincinnati’s premier résumé writer and career coach, I work with clients to turn their dreaded job search into an enjoyable experience that pays off many times over. I help them identify their career desires, define their personal brand, and showcase their unique achievements. And I help them to craft interview-winning résumés that sail through application processes. Here's Why: The typical ré

sumé has on average 7.4 SECONDS to impress a hiring manager before hitting the trash! That’s after making it through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that score most résumés at 40% or lower. My clients shine during interviews thanks to custom interview preparation and style training. Being prepared is critical when first impressions are everything and can mean a difference of $10k+ in the eventual salary you are offered.

✅ WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT:
👉 I am 1 of only 70 writers in the world to be recognized by the National Resume Writers' Association as a Nationally Certified Resume Writer.

👉 I am 1 of just 5 professionals in the Midwest to be recognized as a Certified Professional Résumé Writer and a Certified Professional Career Coach.

👉 There are no forms or questionnaires to fill out. I sit down with each client for an in-depth, 2-hour intake session to learn about you, your career, and identify your personal brand.

👉 I am not exclusively a virtual service. Unlike 98% of résumé writers, I meet all my clients, when applicable, in my Cincinnati office for the 2-hour intake session.

👉 I have more 5-star Google reviews than any other independent résumé writer in the State of Ohio.

✅ Memorial Day weekend is here.

To the job seekers out there: it’s okay to take the weekend off. The applications, networking messages, and LinkedIn scrolling can wait a couple of days.

Spend time with family. Call someone you’ve been meaning to call. Be present with the people who matter most.

The job search can be exhausting, and rest is not falling behind. Sometimes the healthiest and most productive thing you can do is step away, reset, and recharge.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

⭐ People first. Always.

✅ Be your authentic you.

Sounds easy, right?
But is it?

In today’s day and age of AI tools, polished personal brands, filtered career stories, and perfectly crafted LinkedIn posts, authenticity can start feeling more like a strategy than a reality.

But here’s the thing:
People can usually tell when something feels manufactured or out of sorts.

Often the most successful professionals are the ones who show up consistently as themselves. Not perfect. Not scripted. Just real.

That doesn’t mean sharing every detail of your life online.
It means your values, leadership style, communication, and actions actually align with who you say you are.

During an interview, be yourself…if that isn’t good enough for the hiring team, then do you really want to work at a place where you have to put on a false façade to be successful?

AI cannot replace genuine character, integrity, emotional intelligence, or human connection.

In hiring, leadership, and business, authenticity still matters. Probably now more than ever.

⭐ People first. Always.

✅ The Truth About ATS: Dispelling the Myth

Somewhere along the way, the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) became the villain of the job search.

We’ve been told it’s a robot scanning résumés…
an AI assigning secret scores…
a gatekeeper deciding who gets hired and who doesn’t.

That’s simply not true.

An ATS is a database, a digital filing system that stores applications, tracks candidates, and helps recruiters manage workflow. It organizes information. It does not make hiring decisions.

Humans still review résumés. Humans decide who moves forward. Humans make hiring decisions.

The real differentiator isn’t “beating the ATS.”
It’s presenting your experience clearly and aligning your background to the role.

The goal isn’t to outsmart software.
The goal is to resonate with the people making the decision.

Optimize for clarity. Optimize for relevance. Optimize for humans.

⭐ People first. Always.

✅ There is a lot of advice circulating about “beating the ATS.”

One of the most common misconceptions?
That there is some universal ATS score deciding whether a résumé moves forward.

There isn’t.

Tools like Jobscan or Resume Worded can be helpful for checking keyword alignment and highlighting gaps, but their scoring models are proprietary — and they do not represent how actual Applicant Tracking Systems evaluate candidates.

Most ATS platforms are simply structured databases that store, parse, and organize candidate information so recruiters can search and review efficiently.

They are not grading résumés the way many people think.

What actually matters:
• Clear alignment between experience and role requirements
• Relevant keywords used naturally in context
• Logical formatting that parses cleanly
• Demonstrated outcomes and scope of responsibility
• Consistency between résumé, application responses, and LinkedIn

Technology helps organize applicants.
People still make hiring decisions.

Use tools as a guide — not a rulebook.

A strong résumé is built for clarity and relevance, not for chasing a mythical score.

⭐ People first. Always.

✅ Most candidates assume their résumé is first judged by keywords.

In reality, many organizations filter candidates before a human ever sees a résumé — through knockout questions built into the application process.

Knockout questions are designed to confirm minimum requirements such as work authorization, required certifications, years of experience, location constraints, or specific technical capabilities. If the response does not meet the criteria, the application may never advance, regardless of résumé quality.

For job seekers, this reinforces an important point:

A strong résumé matters, but application accuracy matters just as much.

Small oversights can create unintended disqualifications:
• Misinterpreting a years-of-experience question
• Selecting the wrong work authorization response
• Answering inconsistently with résumé details
• Underestimating transferable experience
• Skipping optional questions that actually influence ranking

✅ Unfortunately, job scams are becoming more sophisticated — and more common.

Over the past year, I’ve spoken with multiple candidates, and seen hundreds of posts online, who were contacted by individuals posing as recruiters, only to discover the opportunity wasn’t real.

These situations are frustrating at best… and financially damaging at worst.

As someone who has spent decades in the recruiting and career services industry, I can tell you this clearly:

👉 A legitimate recruiter will never ask for your LinkedIn password. Ever.
No matter how “necessary” they claim it is to “optimize your profile.”

Here are some additional red flags to watch for:

👉 Email addresses using or other free domains
Professional recruiting firms and corporate recruiters almost always use company domains.

👉 They try to move the conversation immediately to Telegram or WhatsApp
Most professional recruiters communicate via phone, video, or company email.

👉 The “interview” is text-only via chat
Real employers want real conversations.

👉 They ask you to obtain a credit report before you’ve even had a real interview
Requests like this are often tied to identity theft schemes.

👉 Compensation that sounds far too good to be true
Especially when the role requirements seem minimal or vague.

👉 They claim your résumé isn’t ATS-optimized and try to sell résumé-writing services
A recruiter’s role is to evaluate talent, not sell side services.

👉 The LinkedIn profile is brand new with very few connections
Credible recruiters typically have an established presence and professional network.

The best recruiters build relationships, ask thoughtful questions, and are transparent about the company, process, and expectations.

If something feels off, trust your instincts and take a few minutes to verify the opportunity.

Protecting your career is just as important as advancing it.

✅ Some of the restaurant brands many of us grew up with are gone.

Not because people didn’t love them.
Not because they weren’t once successful.

But because the industry changed… and they didn’t change with it.

Think about brands like Chi-Chi’s, Howard Johnson’s, Steak and Ale, Kenny Rogers Roasters, or Friendly’s locations that quietly disappeared from so many communities.

They were once packed dining rooms.
Beloved brands.
Industry staples.

But markets evolve.
Consumer expectations shift.
Competition gets smarter.

Restaurants that survive learn to adapt — new menus, new service models, new technology, new ways to reach guests.

The same is true in a job search.

Experience alone isn’t enough anymore.
Titles aren’t enough.
“Doing it the way it’s always been done” isn’t enough.

Professionals who stay competitive do the same things great restaurant brands do:
• Refresh their brand
• Adapt to market changes
• Stay aware of industry trends
• Tell their story in a way that connects with today’s audience

Your career is a living brand. It has to evolve.

Because somewhere out there is an organization looking for exactly what you bring to the table.

But they have to see it in a way that fits today’s market.

✅ Not everyone believes in the value of a professional résumé writer or career strategist.
That’s okay.

Some see a résumé as a document.
Others see a LinkedIn profile as a formality.
And some believe career moves should be figured out alone.

Here’s what I see after doing this work every day:

A résumé isn’t about words, it’s about translation.
Translation of experience into value.
Translation of responsibility into impact.
Translation of a career into a story that decision-makers actually understand.

A career strategist doesn’t “write for you.”
They ask the uncomfortable questions.
They challenge vague answers.
They pull out the wins you’ve minimized, normalized, or forgotten.
They help you see your own career the way hiring leaders do.

Could you do it yourself?
Sure.

But just like leadership, branding, or operations, outside perspective changes outcomes.

I’ve watched careers accelerate not because someone lacked experience,
but because their value wasn’t clearly articulated.

That’s the work.
That’s the difference.
And that’s why this industry exists, even when not everyone understands it.

People first. Always. ⭐

👉 Yesterday marked the 58th anniversary of the debut of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Fred Rogers built something rare:
A platform rooted in empathy, listening, and the belief that people matter, exactly as they are.

He proved that leadership doesn’t require volume, ego, or urgency.
It requires presence.
It requires respect.
It requires seeing the human first.

In today’s world of automation, speed, and constant disruption, that lesson feels more relevant than ever, especially in moments of career transition, organizational change, or leadership shifts.

👉 At 86 Service, that philosophy guides everything we do.
People aren’t headcount.
Careers aren’t transactions.
Transitions deserve dignity, clarity, and care.

⭐ Fred Rogers reminded us that kindness isn’t soft, it’s foundational.
And when people are treated well, everything else works better.

✅ People First. Always.

✅ Networking isn’t a transaction.
It’s an exchange of value.

In hospitality, you learn this fast. The best relationships aren’t built by walking up to someone and asking, “What can you do for me?” They’re built by showing up curious, prepared, and genuinely interested in the person across the table.

Great operators know this instinctively. You take care of the guest first. You listen. You anticipate needs. You add value before you ever expect anything in return. Trust follows.

The same rule applies to networking, whether you’re in restaurants, biotech, tech, or finance. When conversations are based in generosity, insight, and respect, opportunities have a way of finding you.

Real networking is hospitality.
Serve first. Connect second. Grow together.

People first. Always. ⭐
