Our sincerest prayers and condolences to the family of Chief Edmonson.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our active-duty members.

After 45 years of service to the fire service and the citizens of our community, Deputy Chief David Edmondson passed away peacefully at home yesterday surrounded by his loved ones. Throughout his career, he exemplified professionalism, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. His decades of service reflect a lifetime devoted to this profession and the people we serve.

Deputy Chief Edmondson was not only a respected leader but also a mentor, friend, and brother to many within our organization. His experience, knowledge, and leadership helped shape our department and the members who had the privilege of serving alongside him. He also demonstrated incredible strength and resilience through his courageous battle with cancer, facing it with the same determination and character that defined his career.

During this difficult time, please keep the Edmondson family in your thoughts and prayers. We will share additional information regarding arrangements and opportunities for members to pay their respects as soon as it becomes available.

On behalf of the entire Vanderburgh County Fire Department, we extend our deepest condolences to the Edmondson family and honor the decades of service and sacrifice he gave to the fire service.

Today marks 20 years since the tragic November 6, 2005 tornado — a night that affected families across Vanderburgh and Warrick counties.

While our department names may have changed, our roots remain. Seasoned members of the former Scott Township and German Township Fire Departments can still vividly recall responding to this event, and for others, it was a call to action that began their career in firefighting & emergency medical services.

We’re honored to share a memorial event this evening at 7pm at First Christian Church in Newburgh (FCNewburgh). Join survivors, families, and fellow first responders for a chance to remember those who died, those who survived, and those who gave.
