Friday Music Fun - The Answer: "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix/originally written by Bob Dylan. On the Electric Ladyland album, Hendrix' 3d and final studio album released with The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The album was released on this day in 1968. The song was recorded about 6 months after Bob Dylan released his version in 1967. I will post Dylan's version later today. According to that authoritative resource, Wikipedia: "Reviewers have pointed out that the lyrics in "All Along the Watchtower" echo lines in the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 21, verses 5–9:[22][23] . . . . . Other writers such as Keith Negus have indicated that Dylan also drew on verses from the Book of Revelation to write the song.[24] Elliot Wolfson found that Dylan's lyrics also reflected his own response to a melancholy reading of his own approach to Jewish gnosis.[25] The general theme of justice is commented upon by Lisa O'Neill-Sanders, who states that Watchtower presents a "thief in the song... who consoles the victimized and exploited joker. The thief sympathizes but urges the joker to 'not talk falsely'".[26]
Journalist David Stubbs interpreted the song as "obliquely allud[ing] to Bob Dylan's frustrations with his management and with CBS, whom he felt were offering him a royalty rate that was far from commensurate with his status".[27]. . . "
One authority I reviewed indicated Dylan has sung this song more than any others in his live shows. Dylan took inspiration from Woody Guthrie and Robert Johnson, of the blues.
Dave Mason played the 12 string guitar on Hendrix' version. He also released his own version later. Brian Jones, of the Rolling Stones, played percussion.
So what's the point -- Great song - lots of "collaborators" who made this song. Sometimes the "New version" is better than the old. Sometimes not. Anyway, I will post the Dylan version later. For now - have a fantastic weekend.
