Yesterday was an incredible day at our Firefighter for a Day event!

Kids from our community got the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a firefighter — getting hands-on with firefighting equipment, learning about the job, and spending the afternoon alongside Duluth firefighters.

Events like this are only possible because of organizations in our community that are willing to step up and support opportunities for local kids. A huge THANK YOU to all of our partners who helped make the day possible:

Minnesota Power Foundation
Tortoise & Hare Footwear
Free Air Life Co.
Super One Foods
Duluth Fire Department
Duluth Fire Foundation
Firefighters Mutual Aid

And most importantly, thank you to all the kids and families who joined us! We hope you had as much fun as we did showing you what being a firefighter is all about.

We’re already looking forward to the next one!

The history of our department isn't just found in photographs or old newspaper articles—it's carried by the men and women who built it.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to welcome retired members back for coffee, conversation, and the sharing of stories that have shaped the Duluth Fire Department for generations. These gatherings are a reminder that while careers come to an end, the lessons, traditions, and friendships continue to have an impact on those who serve today.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to reconnect, share memories, and help preserve the history of our department. This was just the beginning—we're looking forward to hosting more Coffee with Retirees gatherings throughout the year and hope to see even more familiar faces at future events.

The fire service family doesn't end at retirement.

Please join us in congratulating FEO Joe Marinac and Deputy Fire Marshal Adam Casillas on their promotions to Captain with the Duluth Fire Department.

This achievement is about far more than a new badge or title. It represents countless hours of preparation, sacrifice, and commitment to the craft of the fire service. From long nights studying policies and tactics, to preparing for assessments, practicing scenarios, and pushing themselves through every phase of the testing process, both Joe and Adam put in the work long before promotion day arrived.

The rank of Captain carries tremendous responsibility, and these two have shown the dedication, professionalism, and leadership it takes to earn it. Their commitment to improving themselves ultimately strengthens the entire department and the community we serve.

Congratulations Captain Marinac and Captain Casillas! Well deserved.

There’s something special about a fire station kitchen table. It’s more than just a place to eat — it’s where crews gather after difficult calls, where training and stories are shared, where mentorship happens, and where lifelong friendships are built. For generations of firefighters, the kitchen table has been the heart of the firehouse.

Planning for the new Headquarters Fire Station began in 2024 with the first cut of wood for a project that would become part of that tradition for decades to come.

Through a unique partnership with Duluth East High School, students from the school’s Construction Club dedicated countless hours of craftsmanship, teamwork, and pride to build two custom kitchen tables for the new station. Their hard work, attention to detail, and commitment created something far greater than furniture — they helped build a gathering place for future generations of Duluth firefighters.

To celebrate the delivery and installation of the tables, students from the Greyhound Kitchen program prepared and served lunch for everyone involved, making the day even more special and highlighting the incredible collaboration between students, educators, and the community.

These tables will witness meals after long shifts, conversations during challenging times, laughter between crews, and the everyday moments that make the fire service a family.

We are incredibly proud of the students and staff who helped bring this project to life and grateful for the lasting mark they’ve left on the future of the Duluth Fire Department.
