Thanks to Shinola and Third Man Records for allowing our SLYA students to tour their facilities on Thursday. The students learned a lot from their processes and asked great questions.

Mexicantown is more than a destination. It is part of Detroit's living history. Mexican immigrants began establishing roots in Detroit in the early twentieth century, including families drawn to jobs in the city's growing industrial economy.
Over time, the Bagley and West Vernor corridors became an important center of Latino culture, business and community life.

And in January 2026, the Bagley-West Vernor Historic District officially joined the National Register of Historic Places.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we're proud to celebrate the generations who helped make Southwest Detroit what it is today.

National Hispanic Heritage Month begins today, and at SER Metro-Detroit, this celebration is close to home.

Nearly 600,000 Michigan residents identified as Hispanic or Latino in 2023, and Michigan's Hispanic and Latino population grew 28.6% from 2013 to 2023.

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, we'll celebrate the people behind those numbers — from the history of Southwest Detroit and Mexicantown to growing Hispanic communities across Metro Detroit, SER's own roots and the next generation building our region's future.

Our history is connected. Our community is growing. And there is much to celebrate.

Amigos de SER is more than an annual gathering. It is a celebration of the people, partnerships and opportunities that continue to strengthen our community.

Each year, Amigos brings together supporters, community leaders and friends of SER Metro-Detroit to recognize the impact of our work and the people who make it possible.

We look forward to celebrating together on Oct. 9 and continuing to build brighter futures across Detroit.
