89% of companies now use AI to screen candidates. Most assume it will finally make skills-first hiring real.

It won't.

AI can accelerate hiring decisions. It cannot fix the systems behind them. When screening tools sit on top of misaligned criteria, the result is not smarter hiring. It is automated bias with a veneer of objectivity.

The proof is in the data. Degree requirements in job postings fell sharply between 2019 and 2024, then swung back up by late 2025, nearly erasing five years of progress. The principle is widely accepted. The operating model rarely follows.

The CIOs getting this right treat skills-first hiring as an operating model, not a slogan. They define which skills actually predict performance, align IT and HR around shared metrics, and build relationships with training pipelines before a role opens.

AI won't magically find the right tech talent if your hiring systems are broken; it’s up to leaders to ditch degree requirements and focus on actual skills.

After a slight dip in 2025, the tech workforce is bouncing back, and the numbers tell a compelling story.

CompTIA's just-released State of the Tech Workforce 2026 report projects 185,500 new tech jobs this year, pushing the U.S. tech labor force to nearly 9.8 million.

Over 275,000 active job postings already reference AI skills. And over the next decade, demand for data scientists is projected to grow 420%, cybersecurity analysts 346%, and software engineers 188%.

For hiring managers: the talent competition isn't easing.. It's shifting.

For candidates: the market is rewarding specialization, particularly in AI, cybersecurity, and cloud.
