Workforce Development had an Oprah moment in Lakeland, FL, on Thursday morning, 8/20/26. You had to be there to believe it!!
Helen G Sneed, our Principal Partner, attended the Annual Business Breakfast celebrating 30 years of CareerSource Polk, and a LOT was happening in that room!

A friendly competition among Polk County men raised money to help people overcome barriers to employment, gain skills, build careers, and move toward greater independence. The event also recognized several outstanding community leaders, presented the Best Places to Work awards (where Helen was honored to serve as a judge), and announced the Man of the Year and Person of the Year. She felt a couple of tears trying to roll down her face when that Oprah moment literally drove into the room, lights on, and horns blowing. 😊 {enjoy the video}

Thirty vehicles. Thirty workforce development participants. Thirty opportunities for mobility. Work, school, dentist and doctor's appointments, and it also means visits to grandparents, family trips, and peace of mind. Exploring somewhere new. Finding a favorite park or beach. It means something as simple as ā€œThis summer, we’re going to find a different ice cream place every week!ā€ šŸ¦
Those little things may seem ordinary to many of us. They aren't ordinary when transportation has been a barrier.

And we loved seeing a Lakeland automotive dealership continue to donate vehicles to this program year after year. While it isn't our dealership (a hint of something new), we are proud to be part of an industry that can make such a tangible difference in people's lives.
Because those 30 cars aren't just cars. 🄳
They are access.
They are opportunity.
They are independence.
They are family memories waiting to happen.
Congratulations to CareerSource Polk on 30 years of changing lives through workforce development. Thank you for allowing us to be a small part of it🄰

To those 30 recipients who received their keys on Thursday:
We hope you find a new ice cream place every single week and make a whole lot of memories along the way. šŸ¦šŸš—ā¤ļø

This afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting two wonderful women who work at the Welcome Center in Davenport. Every day, they meet people relocating to Central Florida. Some are excited, nervous, anxious, and a select few are asking: "How do I find the right job?"
The conversation reminded me of something I see all the time. Well-qualified people think they have to start over when changing careers or moving to a new area. They don't.
The challenge usually isn't a lack of experience; it's knowing how to position that experience, so employers recognize its value.
*A teacher can become a corporate trainer.
*A stay-at-home parent can become an office manager.
*A retail manager can transition into operations management.
*A mechanic can move into fleet maintenance leadership.
You're not changing who you are. You're learning how to present what you've already accomplished. It's bigger than updating your resume, and it's more complicated than applying to everything you see on Indeed, LinkedIn, or Glassdoor.
I help people reposition their experience, so employers see them differently. I help you speak the same language so an employer will listen. If you're looking for a better compensation package, it helps to have someone who's designed comp & benefits on your side.
To celebrate new beginnings, I'm offering my Career Reset Package through July 31. Whether you're relocating, changing careers, returning to the workforce, or simply ready for your next opportunity, I'd love to help.
Email me and use "Career Reset Package" in the subject line to learn more. [email protected]

🧭 Career Compass: Navigation Point #3

Your resume did its job. The phone rang. Now what?
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is focusing on their past experiences rather than showing the organization how they can help drive progress. Interviews are a chance to link your experience to a company’s needs, growth, and future success by sharing the situation, the task, the action you took, and your results.

Before the interview, consider adjusting your approach:
āœ… Ask for interviewer names in advance (when possible)
Understand their role and think about how your experience aligns with what matters to them.
āœ… Build examples that demonstrate:
• Adaptability
• Conflict Resolution
• Innovation
• Leadership
āœ… Study the organization and job posting together
āœ… Research compensation and benefits ranges
Ask about an employee handbook!
Understand their priorities and be ready to explain how your experience can support their goals. Come up with questions that will help you understand their priorities over the next 3, 6, and 9 months.

Preparation is all about figuring out how you’ll showcase your value. Take a look at your socials, do they reflect what you have to offer?

Need help preparing for interviews and positioning your experience effectively?

🧭 Career Compass: Navigation Point #2

One of the biggest misconceptions in today's job market is that a resume should tell employers everything you've done throughout your career.

A 21st-century resume has a different mission. It's designed to help recruiters and decision-makers quickly identify your qualifications, accomplishments, and potential value to their organization.

Decision makers are often looking for:
→ Alignment with the role they need to fill
→ Evidence of results and impact
→ Leadership capabilities
→ Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
→ Technical expertise

They're not necessarily looking for every responsibility you've ever had.
They're looking for clues that help answer a simple question:
"Can this person help solve our problems and contribute to our success?"
The organization of your resume matters as much as the content. A well-structured resume guides the reader through your career story, highlights your value, and makes key qualifications easy to find. When that story is difficult to follow, decision makers are more likely to move on to the next candidate.

Consider adjusting your approach:
āœ… Lead with accomplishments, not duties
āœ… Make important information easy to find
āœ… Quantify results whenever possible
āœ… Showcase experiences that support your target role
āœ… Structure your resume so the reader can quickly understand your value

The strongest resumes focus on helping employers envision your future contribution.
