A simple sidewalk project somehow turned into broken irrigation lines, foundation concerns, dead landscaping, contractor texts, engineering reports, and a $16,475 property-damage claim with the City of Dallas.

We documented the whole strange chain of events, including the photos, repair findings, and the memorable message from our irrigation contractor: “they completely destroyed the system.”

It’s hard to believe it has been 25 years since 9/11.
That anniversary brought back a lot of memories for me, where I was that morning, how strange and empty the skies felt afterward, and what was going on in my own life around that time.

Looking back, those years also contained some of the little nudges that eventually pushed me away from a career that didn’t fit me and toward starting Dallas Maids.

So I wrote about it: 9/11, intelligence, entrepreneurship, bad Spanish, South Beach, early business ideas, and a few lessons I learned the hard way. Somehow it all connects.

Recently, Angela, who heads Dallas Maids, organized something I absolutely loved! She brought together volunteers from our Dallas Maids team to spend part of the day helping Habitat for Humanity at a Habitat ReStore. Now, for anyone unfamiliar with Habitat ReStore, donations and purchases there help support Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building affordable homes for families in need. And our team got to volunteer, help the community, spend time together, and probably discover muscles they had forgotten existed. It was exactly the kind of thing I’ve always hoped Dallas Maids would do more of. But Angela didn’t stop there.

While vacationing in Penang, Malaysia, my family stayed at Hotel Capri. Nice hotel, great location, beautiful pool... but what really stuck with me was the staff.

They were ridiculously likable.

Everyone smiled. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to help. At breakfast I think I was bowed to so many times I briefly started wondering if I had accidentally become Malaysian royalty. 😂

It reminded me of one of my favorite marketing books, *Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion*, and specifically the principle of **Liking**: people tend to trust, buy from, and remain loyal to people they genuinely like.

And that got me thinking about Dallas Maids.

Over the years I've learned that you can teach someone how to clean. You can teach systems and procedures. But it's much harder to teach someone to have a good heart. That's why I've always tried to hire people who are not only good at their jobs, but genuinely nice people you'd feel comfortable welcoming into your home.

Of course, the article somehow also wanders into Thai culture, malpractice lawsuits, Baylor, and a pool game in Thailand that I am still strangely proud of losing on purpose.

I promise it all makes sense eventually. 😂

Sometimes a big act of kindness starts with one simple question: “How can I help?” ❤️

After the earthquake in Venezuela, one of our team members reached out wanting to contribute. That small gesture quickly grew into something much, much bigger.

The Dallas Maids ladies came together and raised $265, which went toward food, baby formula, diapers, hygiene products, and other essential supplies for families and shelters helping people affected by the earthquake.

Dallas Maids is matching every dollar, bringing the total contribution to $530.

What makes us proudest isn’t the amount raised, it’s the way our team stepped up for people they had never met, simply because they knew help was needed. And this is the kind of company culture that means the most to us.
