The labor market told an interesting story this spring, one of strength, a brief slowdown, and a steady rebound:

March came in strong, adding 178K jobs with growth across healthcare, construction, and transportation. Despite some federal job cuts, unemployment held steady at 4.3%, and wages showed solid annual growth.

April hit the brakes slightly. Job gains slowed to 115K, but still outperformed expectations. The unemployment rate stayed unchanged at 4.3%, suggesting a market that doesn’t need rapid hiring to remain stable. Wage growth also cooled a bit.

May picked things back up, with 172K new jobs driven by leisure & hospitality, local government, and healthcare. While some sectors like financial activities declined, the overall picture remained steady—unemployment unchanged and wages continuing to rise.

The bigger picture? Not a boom, not a bust—just a labor market finding its balance.
