For many lower middle market companies, the Controller is the center of the finance function. They run the close, lead the accounting team, and keep the business audit-ready. Then a refinancing, an add-on, or a sponsor's value creation plan arrives, and the questions change from what happened last quarter to what comes next.

That is usually when the controller vs. CFO question surfaces. A CFO is not always the answer, but waiting too long to ask is rarely the better choice.

CFO confidence remains firm despite geopolitical tension and ongoing affordability concerns. In U.S. Bank's latest survey of 1,000 senior finance leaders, 68% report a positive three-year outlook on the U.S. economy, up from 58% in the spring. Deloitte's CFO Signals report shows a similar picture, with confidence at 6.1 out of 10, up from 5.9 last quarter.

The more telling data point for us: 57% of U.S. Bank respondents say they are more likely to pursue acquisitions over the next 12 months, up from 49%, and M&A evaluation has risen to the third-highest priority. Inflation and interest rates remain the variables to watch.

For finance leaders planning ahead, growth and deal activity typically translate into demand for senior accounting, finance, and transaction talent.
