Life Learning Center’s annual Light the Way: Together Towards Brighter Futures Gala raised $415,000. The evening's highlight was honoring Jeanne Schroer, CEO of the Catalytic Fund. Jeanne’s vision and commitment to strengthening communities embody the spirit of this year’s Light the Way event. By helping create places where individuals, families, and organizations can thrive, she has helped lay the foundation for opportunity, stability, and hope. Those same values are at the heart of the Center’s mission to help people reenter society, rebuild their lives, and reach their full potential. We are proud to recognize Jeanne for lighting the way for stronger communities and brighter futures.

This year's Member spotlight is Dylan Woodcock. Dylan was born and raised in Edmonson County. Today, he is the Senior Assistant Manager at Rafferty’s in Florence and a Staff Sergeant and Drill Sergeant in the United States Army. According to Dylan, “I’m still becoming the man I want to be. I feel like I’m building a new version of myself, one who understands the value of the people around him, takes responsibility for his choices, and isn’t afraid to keep moving forward. For the first time in a long time, I’m excited to see what the future looks like. I don’t know exactly where it’s going to take me, but I know I want to be there to find out. And I’m grateful that when I looked in the mirror and couldn’t recognize myself anymore, people were willing to help me find that person again.”

Regarding Foundations for a Better Life core pillars, “The physical side gave me something simple that I could control. Getting active, taking care of myself, and seeing progress physically helped me realize that change doesn’t happen all at once. You do something today, then you do it again tomorrow, and eventually you look up and realize you’re not the same person anymore. emotionally, I learned that pretending something doesn’t bother you doesn’t make it disappear. You have to actually deal with things instead of continuing to stuff them into that bottle. With relationships, I learned that the people around you matter, but so does the person you’re bringing into those relationships. Financially, I started thinking differently about money — not just, “how do I get through this week?” but, “what am I actually building?” and spiritually, I started reconnecting with things I had pushed aside. Rebuilding your life isn’t just about getting a job or making money. It’s about figuring out what matters to you and what kind of person you want to be when nobody is watching.”

“When you’re in the chaos, looking down at the ground is second nature. The Life Learning Center not only helped me find my footing, but they also helped me find my peace and dignity again. I started eating well and exercising here with the superb food resources and gym they provide, and I became physically well again for the first time in years. I learned that it’s ok to sit with your emotions and analyze them instead of running away from them or avoiding them by using mind-altering substances or drinking all the time to numb myself. I’m back in touch and spending time with my family who I love dearly, who have been so incredibly supportive of my journey from day one, and who have loved me unconditionally despite my shortcomings. thanks to this incredible organization and team, I have a sharp new suit that was provided to me here that helped me look the part to get hired, and i was able to secure a job that I love here in Covington, and according to my boss, they love having me around, too.”

"When I first came to Life Learning Center, I was going through a difficult time in my life. I was working on my recovery and trying to find my way back to the person I wanted to be. I needed more than just recovery—I needed to learn how to take care of myself, believe in myself, and build a better life.

Life Learning Center gave me that opportunity.

Through the classes, I learned about recovery, self-care, self-love, confidence, and self-esteem. I want to give a special thank-you to my teacher, roger. he was someone who helped make learning meaningful and encouraged me along the way.
The support I received went far beyond the classroom. The care team was there to help me when I needed it. The Dress for Success program helped me feel more prepared and confident about my future. I was also able to use the fitness center, which gave me another way to take care of myself and my well-being. Even the tattoo removal service gave me an opportunity to work on myself and leave some things from my past behind.

Something as simple as being provided with a meal every day also meant a lot to me. knowing that I could come in, have something to eat, and be around people who cared made a difference."

When Billy first came to Life Learning Center, he was at a different place in his life. He had only been sober for a short time but knew he was capable of more and wanted something different for his future. He made the decision to come to LLC and take that next step. Through his time here, he continued building on the progress he had already started and learned how to do more for himself. His determination, combined with the support and opportunities he found at LLC, helped him move forward into meaningful employment. Today, he works with the Operator Union and has benefits that are better than any job he has had before. His story is a reminder that where you are today does not have to determine where you end up tomorrow. When asked what he would say to someone who feels their life can’t change, he said, “If you think your life will not change then it can’t. You have to believe your life will get better before it can. Life Learning Center can change your life if you give it a chance.”

On Wednesday of this week, we celebrated another graduating class. It’s always a very special day when we are able to recognize our graduates for all of their hard work. It is through resilience, grit and an inner drive to take back control. We’re proud of our graduates and hope that they feel the same level of pride. Their future looks brighter because they showed up and did the work!

We’re excited to see Life Learning Center President Alecia Webb-Edgington featured in the latest edition of Women Police Magazine, published by the International Association of Women Police.

The article highlights Alecia’s remarkable journey from Kentucky State trooper to trialblazing nonprofit leader. After retiring from the Kentucky State Police as one of the first women to hold the rank of Major, Alecia went on to serve as Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security during the administration of then-Governor Ernie Fletcher. Alecia was later elected to represent Kentucky’s 63rd District in the House of Representatives. She went on to serve in advisory roles across the globe with the U.S. Department of State and the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement.

The article describes Alecia’s transition from law enforcement and public office to the nonprofit sector as “a masterclass of reinvention”—a mission to change lives by applying lessons she learned on the front lines of policing.
We are incredibly proud to have Alecia as our leader and deeply grateful for her vision, dedication, and commitment to transforming lives and strengthening our community.
