Daylight Savings Time Starts, observed on March 10 this year, is the practice of advancing the clocks by one hour from Standard Time during the summer months and reverting the clocks to Standard Time in the autumn. The fundamental concept is that doing so will help us all to create better use of natural daylight: putting the clocks forward one hour in the spring will give us more daylight during summer nights while changing the clocks back one hour in the fall would give us more daylight during winter mornings. Thus, Daylight Saving Time helps us save energy and reduce costs.

Daylight Savings timekeeping system was intended to optimize available sunlight while reducing energy use and costs.

Throw on some Aqua — March 9 is National Barbie Day! In 1959, an 11-inch tall bombshell made her debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York. Designed by Ruth Handler, the co-founder of Mattel Inc., Barbie was created to allow girls to imagine what their lives could be like in the future. She’s had a slew of careers, from a registered nurse to an astronaut. And she’s done it all with a companion. Barbie was a single lady for all of 2 years. But in 1961, overwhelming demand caused Handler to release a boyfriend for her — Ken. (Verdict’s out if he’s ever going to put a ring on it.) On National Barbie Day, we celebrate all things Barbie.

March 2 is Read Across America Day, a day to celebrate our favorite activity. The day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. The day occurs each year on the birthday of beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, so a perfect way to celebrate is to don a Seussian hat and read one his famous tales, like One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. On National Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading — join us!

The Floating Lantern Festival is on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese calendar. This year, it is on February 24. Floating lanterns are traditional Chinese lights made of paper or oiled silk designed to be released onto waterways or into the air. Lanterns that are meant for water are called floating lanterns or water lanterns, while those that fly up in the sky are called sky lanterns.

At the Floating Lantern Festival, let lanterns carry wishes and please deities to bring peace and fortune. Join us in lighting them!
