Employee turnover can be a costly and disruptive issue for businesses of all sizes. Let’s face it. Everyone that reads this column has concerns about or is involved in the reduction of employee turnover.

Turnover not only impacts productivity and morale, but revolving doors also require significant resources for additional recruitment and training that might have been avoided.

There are many ways to combat turnover, but one of the most powerful and, frankly, least expensive ways, is to assign a mentor to every new employee.

Don’t Be Surprised by a Positive Reaction from Your Staff
Most of your senior staff would be delighted to mentor a newbie. Conduct a poll or a survey and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Many workers get personal fulfillment from mentoring and enjoy sharing their knowledge. A mentor often feels a sense of satisfaction.

Mentoring can also help develop leadership skills. While mentoring is not a supervisory position, good mentors have leadership skills that can’t help but be further developed by becoming an adviser, confidante, and coach.

Benefits for Mentees
1. Improved Employee Engagement and Satisfaction

• Increased Confidence: Mentors can boost mentee confidence by sharing their experiences and offering encouragement.

• Emotional Support: Mentors can offer emotional support, helping mentees navigate workplace challenges and stress.

In previous articles, we discussed the importance of having a solid compensation plan, comprehensive benefits, performance-based incentives, employee recognition, work-life balance, strong leadership, and open communication.

These are all great methods for reducing employee turnover. However, assigning a mentor to every new employee just makes so much sense.

By implementing a mentorship program, at little to no cost, organizations can create a more loyal workforce less inclined to turn over.

And don’t forget, reduced turnover will lead to increased productivity, improved morale, and the long-term success of your company.
