National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) The Nation's EMS Certification Today, more than 500,000 EMS clinicians are certified by the National Registry.

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (National Registry) is the non-profit Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Certification organization for the United States. Its mission is to provide a valid, uniform process to assess the knowledge and skills required for competent practice by EMS clinicians throughout their careers, and to maintain a registry of certification status. All 50 sta

tes recognize National Registry certification, while 48 states use National Registry certification as a basis for licensure. EMS clinicians at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced EMT (AEMT) and Paramedic levels work in a variety of capacities throughout the nation as first responders, in hospitals and medical facilities, in schools and colleges, with the police and military and in many other settings.

Your voice is essential in shaping the standards of our profession. The National Registry Board of Directors has proposed updates to the Accepted Education & Documentation Policy (82.07), and we want to hear from you.

These updates are designed to provide more clarity for every Clinician regarding recertification and entry pathways. Key changes include a broader definition of acceptable education, such as courses focused on Clinician safety and well-being, as well as clearer timelines for continuing education.

The comment period remains open until Monday, July 13, 2026.

This unique, four-year program offers a path to a PhD from The Ohio State University College of Public Health while you work as a full-time employee of the National Registry. Our Research Fellow receives comprehensive employee benefits and full coverage of all costs associated with the PhD program, including tuition, parking, and fees.

For this , we are looking back at an incredible year of advancing knowledge and creating impact.

Our research team had 17 total publications last year. This includes 10 publications completed directly by our research team, and 7 completed in partnership with our dedicated collaborators.

In addition to these publications, the National Registry strengthened its commitment to evidence-based practice with the launch of our new Research Article Database.

This freely available resource centralizes more than 50 curated research articles in a single location, providing EMS Clinicians, Educators, program leaders, researchers, and policymakers with direct access to current evidence and emerging insights. To help you find exactly what you need, the database is organized into three key focus areas:
🔹 Workforce: Resources to better understand current workforce trends.
🔹 Clinical Care: Insights to strengthen clinical decisionmaking and real-world application.
🔹 Education and Clinical Judgment: Evidence to support and strengthen educational practices.

On June 4, 1970, the National Registry was established to build a consistent, nationwide standard for training, testing, and certification to EMS.

Decades later, the photos in this post remind us just how much has changed. Practices and equipment once considered state of the art have evolved as research and evidence have advanced patient care.

As we celebrate 56 years of the National Registry, we are proud of our history, excited about the future, and committed to supporting EMS clinicians through certification, recertification, and lifelong learning.
