National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) The Nation's EMS Certification Today, more than 500,000 EMS clinicians are certified by the National Registry.

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (National Registry) is the non-profit Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Certification organization for the United States. Its mission is to provide a valid, uniform process to assess the knowledge and skills required for competent practice by EMS clinicians throughout their careers, and to maintain a registry of certification status. All 50 states recognize National Registry certification, while 48 states use National Registry certification as a basis for licensure. EMS clinicians at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced EMT (AEMT) and Paramedic levels work in a variety of capacities throughout the nation as first responders, in hospitals and medical facilities, in schools and colleges, with the police and military and in many other settings.

How does mechanism of injury shape airway management on scene?

A national study published in Prehospital Emergency Care highlights new insights into prehospital trauma airway placement. Researchers evaluated over 5.7 million EMS trauma responses from the 2023 National EMS Information System dataset to understand how advanced airway device utilization varies across injury types.

While overall advanced airway placement is rare, occurring in less than four out of every 1,000 trauma activations, specific high-energy mechanisms demand rapid intervention. Falls and motor vehicle collisions account for the largest total volume of trauma calls, but fi***rm-related injuries and motorcycle crashes show the highest rates of advanced airway use across every age group. Fi***rm injuries resulted in over 51 advanced airway placements per 1,000 activations, and surgical cricothyrotomy was performed most frequently in cases involving fi***rm trauma and intentional self-harm.

Understanding these injury patterns allows EMS agencies to optimize training and equipment preparation. High-risk calls require early assessment and procedural readiness for complex airways.
