USS Texas (BB-35) — Gulf Copper Dry Dock, Galveston, Texas. She sits in the dark like something the sea refused to keep.
USS Texas — BB-35 — the last warship on earth to have fought in both World War I and World War II. Launched in 1912. Over a century of steel, salt, and history.

By the time she was towed into dry dock in 2022, she was slowly sinking. Water pouring through a hull that had held together through two world wars couldn't hold together through peacetime neglect. Workers were pumping out nearly 2,000 gallons per minute just to keep her afloat.

What followed was one of the most ambitious warship restorations in American history. Over 400,000 man-hours. More than 700 tons of steel replaced. A hull rebuilt from the keel up. Fresh Navy Blue 5-N paint, matched to her 1945 combat appearance.
She earned it.

Texas was the first U.S. battleship ever converted into a museum — a living monument parked at the San Jacinto Battleground since 1948. She watched over the ground where Texas won its independence. Now, after four years of restoration at Galveston's Gulf Copper shipyard, she's heading to a permanent berth at Pier 15 in Galveston — a new home built to survive a Category 5 hurricane.

Some ships get scrapped. Some get sunk as reefs. Texas gets rebuilt.

The grand reopening is expected in 2026. A hundred and thirteen years old, and she's not done yet.
