šŸš€ From Star Trek to Life Lessons šŸš€

I’ve been a Sci-Fi fan for as long as I can remember — and yes, Star Trek is right at the top of that list.

Recently, I read William Shatner’s Boldly Go – Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder. His perspective on life is inspiring — he’s an avid learner, unafraid to try new things, sometimes excelling, sometimes not, but always growing.

In the book, he shares moments of joy and vulnerability: his struggles with loneliness, his deep love for animals (especially horses and dogs), his regrets, and his adventures — including a safari for a game show and his decision to never hunt again. A chapter called ā€œThere’s Beauty in Everythingā€ is a reminder that we are all students of life, no matter our age.

In 2022, I had the honor of meeting him. There was a glass wall between us (post-Covid precautions), but the moment was unforgettable. He sat there with a warm, genuine smile that I’ll never forget.

This book didn’t just entertain me — it reaffirmed why William Shatner holds a special place in my heart. šŸ’›

The Art of Creating an Excellent Customer Experience

Last week, I was on vacation at the beach and couldn’t help but notice the wildly different levels of customer service from place to place. It got me thinking—how did the art of providing exceptional service get lost for some businesses, but not others?

Take my hotel, for example. They texted me twice a day just to check in—asking how things were going or if I needed anything. Some might call that overkill, but to me, it was thoughtful and exceeded expectations. I turned to my sister and said, ā€œThis is why when we come back next year, we’re staying here.ā€

In a world moving fast with AI, automation, and tools promising to make everything easier… the human touch still matters most.

In my business, recruiting…
Job boards can get you applicants.
But connection? That’s human.
And that’s where we come in.

At Reach Hire Talent Solutions, we bridge the gap between the people you need and the growth you’re after—one meaningful conversation at a time.

"Agism is all in your head." Really? Let me tell you a story.

I'm 54. A proud and grateful 54-year-old. And I’ve spent 29 years in this industry I love.
This week, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with a former client—now a candidate. We had a fantastic conversation, and we both admitted how hard the job market can be for candidates over 50 (and especially over 60).

So I shared this story with him:
I was on a video interview with a mid-sized staffing company (who shall remain nameless) last year. They were a traditional firm trying to break into the MSP space—like many have tried before. Cue the eye roll.

The hiring manager, who was the same age as me, said:
"You know Laurie, I just hired someone who was 53. She collected a salary for a year and didn’t really bring in the sales results we wanted. I just don’t want that to happen again."
Yikes.

Now, I knew this next moment could make or break the interview. But I couldn’t let that comment go unchecked. I calmly responded:
"Can you please not project your last experience with an employee onto me?"

The backpedaling was immediate. It was demoralizing. Honestly—just gross.

Yes, agism is very real. I believe candidates over 50 bring enormous value to the table—but it often goes unseen or underappreciated. And I won’t sit quietly when I hear someone reduce a person to their age.

Did I get the job?
Nope.
And I’m beyond grateful I didn’t.

Fair warning: this is going to sound like a rant.

I came up in a time when recruiting happened almost entirely over the phone—so it’s still my go-to method of communication. Since launching my company, I’ve made a habit of calling candidates before sending a text or email. And at times, it's someone who has actually posted their background on a job board or similar platform.

Now, I dislike spam callers as much as the next person. But after I introduce myself and provide some context, you’d hope the potential job seeker on the other end would respond with some level of professionalism. This week, though? It’s been brutal—

It can happen when a day and time is even scheduled. Take this morning: I had a set phone interview at 10 a.m. I cheerfully say, ā€œGood morning!ā€ The response? One word. And no—it wasn’t ā€œgood morning.ā€; which is two words, but that's beside the point. This is someone interviewing for a $250K role, mind you. I’ve had warmer responses from candidates applying for $20/hour jobs.

So, if you’re on the job hunt and a number pops up on your phone that you don’t recognize, maybe channel a little wisdom from one of my favorite movies, Roadhouse:
ā€œI want you to be nice….until it's time not to be nice"

Remember the old adageā€”ā€œAlways be closingā€?

It applies to interviews just as much as sales.
When I send a candidate into an interview, they walk in prepared—not anxious.
Why? Because I give them more than a job description.

They get:
- Coaching tailored to the hiring manager’s style
- Practice with real-world questions and smart answers
- A reminder to show real enthusiasm—and close strong
What does a strong close look like?

ā€œI’m genuinely excited about this opportunity. Can you share what the next steps in the process look like?ā€

Simple. Clear. Confident.

It’s these small details that help candidates stand out—and help my clients hire better, faster.

That’s the kind of feedback I love hearing from candidates—because preparation is everything.

This comment came from a Business Development Rep I recently placed, selling into small manufacturing businesses. They appreciated how thorough the prep was throughout the interview process—and that’s by design.

I aim to make every candidate feel confident, ready, and supported. Even if a role doesn’t pan out, I want the experience to be a value-add in their career journey.

If you're hiring and want your candidate experience to reflect your brand at its best, let’s talk.

I jumped on a video meeting a few weeks ago and my client says ā€œI’m feeling so overloaded and it’s only 9amā€¦ā€

Her fatigue, she shared, was about having about 50+ jobs open that are all high priority to her varied hiring managers. I could relate.

Early in my career, I was hired as the first Corporate Recruiter for Huntington Learning Centers. I had no systems, no computer (had to use my personal computer) and over 50 FT jobs to fill across six states. On top of that, I was sick with a cold all-the-time...I truly bow down to teachers and other workers who must have far better immune systems than mine!

It’s tough when we feel completely overburdened at work. I remember resigning, after slogging it out for a year, and feeling such a sense of pure and total relief.

Can you relate?

If you oversee hiring for a manufacturing company, you've likely had a candidate vanish after the interview — or worse, after accepting the offer.

Ghosting is real, and it's frustrating.

Here are a few ways my clients and I work to reduce it:

Stay human — The more personal the process, the more respect you get back. A simple text update goes a long way.

Speed matters — When offers take 2+ weeks to finalize, top candidates vanish. Quick decisions = better results.

Clarity wins — Candidates ghost less when they know what to expect in terms of shift, pay, start date, and who they’re meeting.

The truth? You can’t avoid ghosting 100%, but you can dramatically reduce it with the right process and communication.

If you’re juggling open reqs and tired of the disappearing acts, let’s talk. I’d love to help you streamline and secure better hires.
