Welcome to the team, Alanna!
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Alanna Homan to the Dairy Management Specialist position on the CCE Central NY Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team. Alanna Homan’s love and appreciation for dairy extension education began at the age of nine when she joined her local county’s 4-H club. While in 4-H, she bred and owned registered Holstein cattle and aspired to have a career in the industry ever since. That passion led her to pursue a degree in Animal Science from Cornell University as a part of the Dairy Fellows program and a Ph.D. from Penn State University, focusing on dairy cattle nutrition and lactation physiology. While at Penn State, she received grants from both the USDA and Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research Education program to study dietary factors influencing mammary uptake of fatty acids, milk fat production, and butter properties in lactating dairy cows. She also received several first-place awards for her ability to translate the results of her research to broad audiences. Throughout her undergraduate and graduate career, she remained involved with both adult and youth extension, which included extension farm visits, designing and teaching workshops, judging state dairy showmanship contests, and establishing an agricultural afterschool program for underprivileged children.
She is excited to join the Cornell Cooperative Extension team of Central NY as a dairy management specialist and looks forward to working closely with dairy producers and industry professionals to support the success of farms throughout the region.
