Job openings are ticking up but hiring still feels slow. Why?

According to the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), U.S. job openings rose by about 396,000 in January to roughly 6.9 million. While this is a modest increase, openings remain lower than they were a year ago.

Economists describe the current environment as “low-hire, low-fire.” Many companies are holding onto existing employees while taking a more cautious approach to adding new roles. At the same time, fewer professionals are leaving their jobs, creating a labor market that feels stable, but less dynamic.

For employers, this can make hiring feel quieter even though demand for specialized talent still exists. With fewer professionals actively exploring new opportunities, organizations may need a more proactive approach to finding and engaging the right candidates.
