In our “Active8 TSUNAGU Interview Series,” we spotlight individuals from diverse fields who serve as bridges between Japan and North America. As we prepare to bid farewell to 2024, we hope you're all doing well. In our “Active8 TSUNAGU Interview Series,” we spotlight individuals who act as bridges between Japan and North America in their respective fields.

Through our “TSUNAGU: Bridge-Builders” series, we interview individuals who are connecting Japan and North America through their work. Last time, we spoke with Akane Mashimo, who runs a kimono dressing school in Los Angeles and serves as the president of the LA Kimono Club. Our latest interview features Mariko Kallister, a master of soba-making who came to her craft through an intense personal journey. A native of the Aichi Prefecture in Japan, Mariko now lives in Chicago, and by day is a human resources professional at a Japanese American corporation. She spends many weekends at the city’s premier Japanese restaurants and bars demonstrating the process of soba-making as she educates her audiences about the Japanese traditions associated with these special noodles.
