If you look back at the beginning of your career and don't cringe a little bit, are you even growing?
As educators and clinicians, we put an immense amount of pressure on ourselves to have it all figured out on day one. The thing about your first year (and every year really!) is that you will make mistakes. Looking back years later and wondering what you were thinking is just proof of your professional evolution.
Her biggest piece of advice for new teachers and therapists? Build your village.
Ask the hard questions.
Lean on your mentors.
Collaborate with administrators, other teachers and the related service providers - these people will become you go tos!
True professional growth doesn't stop after year one. We will forever be constantly learning, even from graduate students who bring fresh eyes and novel ideas to the table.
To the new graduates and first-year professionals stepping into the schools: Take a deep breath. You don't need to know everything right now. Just keep learning.
