Unpopular teacher opinion: If you don't like working after contract hours, don't assign your students homework. ๐Ÿ‘ or ๐Ÿ‘Ž?

Are you team "practice at home builds habits," or team "leave school at school"?

It's week 2 for my kiddos and to say that we're still getting into the swing of things is an understatement... so if they want to hide under a blanket while they read their braille flashcards, I'm not going to pick a battle on that front. I'll take the wins where I can.

Buying a house on a teacherโ€™s salary? Don't start the process without checking out these programs first! ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ”‘

Most educators don't know that there are massive home-buying grants and fee discounts out there created specifically for us:

Teacher Next Door National Home Buying Program: You can qualify for up to $15,000 in down payment assistance, plus non-repayable grants between $1,000 and $9,000. It also wipes out broker and application fees, gives you preferred interest rates, and covers a free appraisal!

Homes for Heroes: While not a direct loan, they partner you with teacher-friendly agents and lenders who cut their own fees to save educators an average of $2,000โ€“$3,000 on closing costs.

Buying a home is stressful enoughโ€”make sure you're claiming the money you're entitled to! Tag a teacher friend who's looking to buy!

It is a rare day in my classroom when I manage to shock my students into absolute silence.... especially my most talkative, question-asking kiddo!

He genuinely didn't know what to do with having one of his teachers surprise him like this.

Working in SpEd means your days are 50% specialized instruction and 50% navigating completely unfiltered, hilarious conversations with tiny humans. Wouldn't trade it for anything! โค๏ธ

Can I just brag for a second? We just had the MOST incredible field trip at the Lincoln Park Zoo! ๐Ÿฆฉโœจ (Also, a second brag... after 10 years as a TVI this is the first group field trip I was able to plan!)

If youโ€™ve been following along, you know I teach students who are blind and visually impaired. Honestly, typical zoo visits can be really tough for my kids. It's a lot of walking, listening to other kids react to things they can't see, and bc of all that eventually getting bored and running low on energy.

This trip was COMPLETELY different. We called ahead, and the Lincoln Park Zoo accessibility staff knocked it out of the park! The head of accessibility - Bill was amazing! Our guides, Miss Maddie and Miss Olivia, created a fully tactile experience where the kids got to touch real flamingo feathers, examine skull models, and meet a working dog guide.
..And of course, out of everything we learned, my 6-year-old studentโ€™s absolute favorite part was feeling the different sizes of replica animal p**p. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’ฉ

Pro tip for all my fellow SpEd educators: ALWAYS call ahead! True accessibility turns an entire day around.

First week in SPED? Step away from the bulletin boards for just a second! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ“‹

Before diving into classroom decorating, focus on getting your caseload organized, mapping your IEP due dates, and drafting your service schedule (knowing it will change a dozen times!). Save the room setup for when you need a fun brain break.

Tag a new teacher or student teacher starting their school year! ๐ŸŒŸ

First-year teacher tip: skip the regular cute planners and grab an educator-specific one! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ““

Having your parent contact logs, gradebook, and student data tracking all bound in one single place will save you so much stress when things get busy.

Tag a new teacher or student teacher who is prepping their classroom right now! ๐ŸŒŸ

Anyone else struggle with on the spot explanations? I thought nut vs not would be easier to explain but I ended up stumbling through it.

But the way he connected it to his favorite book, The Gruffalo, was awesome!

Special education is all about quick pivots and celebrating the breakthroughs along the way.

Tag a fellow teacher who needs a smile today! ๐ŸŒŸ

Say goodbye to lost sticky notes and endless paper charts! ๐Ÿ“ฑโœจ

Using Google Forms for classroom data tracking is a total game changer. You can open it on your phone or tablet during lessons, log student progress instantly, and view automatically generated charts showing exactly where your student is mastering skills or needing extra help.

Plus, when you drop that compiled data into Gemini, drafting progress reports and lesson adaptations becomes a breeze! (I know I know... but I use AI sparingly and as a tool to make my job more efficient and to have more time with my students) ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ก
