Career Advancement and Career Change

Whether you are looking to move up in your current career path or change careers, it is important to have a target for your job search. Identify what kind of role you want to pursue. Next, review 10 job posts to test your qualifications. Look for transferable experiences and skills, actions you have performed in previous roles that you will need in your next role. For example, if you have planned and managed projects, you can list that experience on a resume even if you have never had the title Project Manager.

Should you pursue certification or graduate education as part of career advancement or career change? It depends on your history and goals. If you have transferable experience and skills, you probably can make the transition without any new education. However, if you lack knowledge or experience in your career target, a graduate degree or certificate might be the key that opens the door.

This coming Tuesday, October 13, QS Discover is holding a free event at the Hilton Chicago (720 S. Michigan Ave.) from 5-8:30. The Professional Value of Graduate Education

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, I'll be leading a presentation on resume writing for work, graduate school admission, and post-graduate professional advancement. I'll also be reviewing resumes as part of QS Discover's Master & MBA Admissions Event at the Hilton Chicago on Tuesday, October 13 from 5:00-8:30 pm..

I've presented at several of these fairs and highly recommend them to anyone who is thinking about investing their time and money in graduate education. It’s Not Always the ATS

Some job seekers believe that they are getting rejected or ghosted by employers because an ATS screened out there resume. In many cases, that will be true. However, there are other factors to consider:

1. Timing: Different employers and different hiring teams at companies will screen resumes on different schedules. Some companies may take only a day to screen resumes and select candidates for human screening. Others may take multiple days depending on the quality of candidates they are seeking and how badly the position needs to be filled. You cannot know how any company is screening, so my advice is to apply for any job that interests you. Keep in mind that the recruiter may have already selected resumes for follow up.

2. You are “spraying and praying:” This problem occurs when a candidate uses the same resume to apply for different types of jobs. I’m not saying every resume should be unique, but it needs to focus on a certain type of job. For example, if a marketing professional is seeking jobs in branding and growth marketing, they need to show a different type of experience and skill sets. Branding focuses on the company’s identity and messaging. Growth marketing is much more aligned with sales. These different career paths will have different keywords, so the candidate should have two resumes. Keep your job search focused.

3. The position has been pulled: Sometimes companies don’t get the kind of candidates they are looking for. Or during screening they realize there was a problem in the language of the job posting. In such cases, companies will pull an ad and change its language and qualifications, and repost.

4. A human decided not to call you: Your resume may have gotten past the ATS screen only to have a human screener decide that you don’t meet the criteria the hiring team is looking for. Or the screener might really like your resume, but have found other candidates who are better qualified.

I don’t deny the importance of ATS-compliance. Before you submit a resume, always review the job description for possible keywords and make needed edits.

Any of the elements above can lead to being ghosted or rejected. Control what you can control. For most people, the job search is long and frustrating. The secret to success is to stay focused and consistent.
