Everybody's still arguing about whether there's a driver shortage. Meanwhile the qualified pool is contracting from three directions simultaneously.

Add a Class 8 fleet that has already contracted, and you get what we're seeing in October: utilization near 98%, tender rejections at 14%, and carriers raising standards and pay at the same time.

The practical takeaway for fleet owners: your 2027 hiring plan can't assume the same candidate pool you recruited from in 2024. Build the bench now.

❌ Gaps with no explanation — recruiters assume the worst. One line fixes it.
❌ No equipment detail — "OTR driver" tells me nothing. Re**er? Flatbed? Auto or manual? Chains?
❌ No numbers — average weekly miles, years accident-free, endorsements. That's what gets you the callback.

Which means roughly three out of four haven't and their drivers are being called by the ones who did. It is worth knowing where you actually sit, because your drivers already do. They compared notes at the truck stop last week.
The fleets holding drivers this year aren't always the highest payers. They're the ones where the miles are consistent, the pay stub is readable, and a promise about home time survives contact with dispatch.

1️⃣ Pick a SAP — a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional. You choose and pay; your old employer doesn't get to pick for you.

2️⃣ Initial assessment — the SAP sets your education or treatment plan. The date goes into the Clearinghouse.

3️⃣ Complete the plan — then a follow-up evaluation. Skip steps and you start over.

4️⃣ Return-to-duty test — observed, and only after the SAP clears you in writing.

5️⃣ Follow-up testing — minimum 6 unannounced tests in your first 12 months back. Your SAP can require more.

Not because the grass is greener. Because of leverage.

Right now capacity is tight, utilization is near 98%, and fleets are trying to cover a late-October peak with fewer trucks than last year. That's the part of the calendar where a recruiter returns your call in an hour instead of a week — and where "what would it take" is an actual conversation.

Know your numbers before you call anyone: your real weekly average miles, your home time as it actually happened (not as promised), and your last three months of gross.
