The Federal Reserve’s latest Beige Book report found that U.S. economic activity has remained largely unchanged in recent weeks, with employment holding steady. However, signs of softening in demand and consumer spending have begun to appear, particularly among middle and lower-income households. The report also noted ongoing labor shortages in industries such as hospitality, construction, and manufacturing, as policymakers weigh conditions ahead of the next interest rate decision. U.S. economic activity was little changed and employment was largely stable in recent weeks, the Federal Reserve said on Wednesday, but there were emerging signs of weakness including more layoffs and middle- and lower-income households pulling back on spending.

Federal Reserve officials agreed to cut interest rates in September after seeing signs of a slowing labor market and ongoing inflation risks, according to meeting minutes released Wednesday. Nearly all members supported the quarter-point cut, noting that employment risks had increased while inflation could stay higher than expected. With the September jobs report delayed by the government shutdown, the Fed plans to monitor upcoming data before deciding on additional rate cuts, as markets now expect two more before year’s end. The central bank lowered interest rates at its September meeting even while acknowledging inflation was above its target.

As a U.S. government shutdown looms, one consequence would be that the Labor Department will suspend major economic data releases, including the September jobs report. The Bureau of Labor Statistics would stop data collection, processing, and publication until funding resumes, delaying crucial information and data. The only exception would be the August Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment report, which is still scheduled for release. The U.S. Labor and Commerce departments said on Monday that their statistics agencies would halt economic data releases in the event of a partial government shutdown, including closely watched employment data for September, construction spending and possibly international trade data for August.

In the work we do, honesty is paramount to building the trust and friendship we pride ourselves on. Sadly, many workers say lately that they’ve been “catfished” by a job offer, meaning the job they accepted didn’t match what was promised during recruiting. According to a Monster survey, 79% of respondents reported roles being misrepresented, especially around responsibilities or work expectations. About half said their day-to-day tasks ended up being different, and one in five felt the company culture didn’t match what was described. Employers have a responsibility to build their teams with fairness and honesty at the forefront, and need to do better to respect the people who want to join them in their mission. Even outside of “ghost jobs,” workers claim their positions aren’t what they signed up for.

New York recently passed what’s known as the “NLRB Trigger Bill,” changing its Labor Relations Act so that the state’s Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) can cover certain private-sector employers when the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) can’t act—especially due to lack of quorum. The law kicks in immediately, narrowing a previous exemption that kept private employers otherwise covered by the NLRA out of PERB’s reach. In response, the NLRB’s Acting General Counsel said his office will sue to block this law, arguing it violates federal jurisdiction over labor relations. On September 5, 2025, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law what is dubbed a “NLRB Trigger Bill” amending the New York State Labor Relations Act.

Connecticut’s minimum wage is set to increase to $16.94 an hour on January 1, 2026, making it the fifth-highest in the country. Governor Ned Lamont said the adjustment is a fair and modest boost that will give workers more financial security while also helping local economies keep up. The increase originates from a 2019 law passed that requires adjustments to pay based on changes in economic factors. The U.S. job market seems to have moved away from the “Great Resignation” and into what economists are calling the “Big Stay.” People are keeping their jobs longer, while many companies are holding back on both hiring and firing. This “no-hire, no-fire” trend is creating stability for current workers but leaving fewer options for those trying to change jobs or enter the workforce. Many workers are staying put in their jobs, while businesses are putting the brakes on hiring or firing.

A new report from the World Health Organization and the World Meteorological Organization says workers need better protection from extreme heat as climate change brings more frequent heatwaves. The report points out that high temperatures can hurt health, lower productivity, and even increase workplace accidents. It urges governments, employers, schools, and communities to work together on solutions—like shifting work hours, upgrading buildings, and improving policies—to keep people safe, including children, older adults, and those most at risk. Workers, employers and governments need to adapt to a more extreme climate, the organisation says.

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed rolling back climate regulations for power plants. The proposal would withdraw limits on carbon emissions for new gas-fired plants and coal plants using carbon capture, as well as remove standards for mercury and air toxics. If finalized, the changes could affect how future power facilities, including gas plants and data centers, are regulated and operated. The U.S. Department of Labor is preparing to review and possibly reverse rules on joint employer status and independent contractor classification. Staff have been told to stop enforcing the Biden-era contractor rule and return to earlier guidelines. The agency is also weighing changes to joint employer standards, domestic service worker protections, and retirement plan disclosures. Opinion letters have resumed, including one affirming an older stance on contractors in virtual marketplaces. Details on the status of specific rules were unavailable at press time, however, as a White House website appeared to be taken offline.
