It’s been another busy week for UVA Pipelines & Pathways, with our team out in the community connecting people to resources, employment opportunities, and individualized support.

🏡 Monday | City of Promise DreamBuilders Kickoff
We were excited to join participants, coaches, City of Promise staff, and fellow community partners for the DreamBuilders Kickoff! Our team had meaningful conversations, shared information about P&P programs and resources, exchanged contacts, and began building relationships that can help connect families to opportunities and support as they work toward their goals and greater self-sufficiency.

🏭 Wednesday | Emerson Job Fair
Just two days later, our team joined Emerson for a career fair supporting employees impacted by the upcoming Charlottesville plant closure. With more than 50 employees preparing to navigate their next career steps, P&P is ready to provide personalized support—from career guidance, resume and interview preparation, and job-search assistance to connections with employment opportunities and other community resources.

Whether employees want to continue in similar roles, transfer their skills to another industry, or explore an entirely new career path, our team will be there to help them identify and pursue what comes next.

While these two events served people at very different points in their journeys, our purpose was the same: meet people where they are, build relationships, and connect them to opportunities that can help them move forward.

Thank you to City of Promise, Emerson, and our many community partners for allowing us to be part of this work.

🩸 Learning by Doing: Exploring Careers in Phlebotomy! There’s no better way to explore a career than to get a hands-on look at the skills involved!

On August 27, UVA Pipelines & Pathways welcomed 10 participants to our Skills Building Workshop: Phlebotomy & Specimen Management at the Virginia Career Works Charlottesville Center .

Led by Briana Shelton, Medical Laboratories Education Coordinator with UVA Health , participants learned about phlebotomy, proper specimen collection and handling, and career opportunities within the field. They also had the chance to roll up their sleeves and gain hands-on exposure to basic phlebotomy techniques—including the proper use and application of tourniquets. 🧪🩸

Beyond learning new skills, participants were able to ask questions, hear directly from an experienced UVA Health professional, and gain a better understanding of what it takes to work in phlebotomy and specimen management.

These workshops are all about turning career curiosity into career exploration by giving community members opportunities to experience different occupations firsthand and determine where their interests and talents might lead them.

A big thank you to Briana Shelton and UVA Health Medical Laboratories for sharing their time and expertise, and to Virginia Career Works for their continued partnership in helping us bring career-building opportunities directly to the community!

🎉 Another Successful Pipelines & Pathways Pop Up!

More than 30 job seekers joined us today at the UVA Pipelines & Pathways Pop Up—and they came ready to take their next step! Throughout the event, we conducted numerous on-the-spot interviews for two exciting opportunities:

🧸 Pathways to Success Early Childhood Educator Training Program — helping individuals gain the training and skills needed to launch a career in early childhood education.

💙 UVA Health Children’s Access — job seekers had the opportunity to meet directly with hiring managers, learn more about available positions, and interview on-site.

Events like these are a great example of what can happen when we bring opportunities directly to job seekers, remove barriers in the hiring process, and connect employers with potential talent in the community.

A BIG thank you to the UVA Health Children’s Access Team for spending the day with us and to Virginia Career Works Charlottesville Center for their continued partnership and for providing a welcoming space for our Pop Ups. We couldn't do this work without great partners! 👏

Ready for a fresh start or a new career? UVA Pipelines & Pathways is now recruiting for our October Pathways to Success Early Childhood Educator Training Program! 🎓🧸

No early childhood experience? No problem! This program provides 80 hours of PAID training to help you gain the skills, certifications, and workplace readiness needed to begin a career as an Early Childhood Educator. Participants receive a $15/hour stipend during training and may have the opportunity to transition into full-time employment with one of our childcare employer partners after successfully completing the program.

This video captures what makes this initiative so special—bringing together community partners, employers, educators, and motivated individuals to create meaningful pathways into rewarding careers while addressing the critical need for early childhood educators across our region.

A heartfelt thank you to Charlottesville Inside Out (CVIO) for shining a spotlight on the impact of this program and sharing the stories of our participants and partners.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the United Way of Greater Charlottesville for their partnership and shared commitment to strengthening our community through workforce development and expanding access to quality early childhood education.

This program would not be possible without the collaboration of our outstanding partners, including UVA STREAMin³, Bright Horizons, Piedmont Family YMCA, Bright Beginnings, Foundations Early Learning, and many others who have invested their time, expertise, and support to help participants launch meaningful careers.

🎉 Congratulations to the Graduates of HOOS Driving: FlexRide & Ride! 🎉

Last week, UVA Pipelines & Pathways proudly celebrated the graduation of eight participants from the HOOS Driving: FlexRide & Ride Training Program! Family members, University leaders, and community partners joined us to recognize the graduates' accomplishments and hear firsthand how the program helped prepare them for their new careers.

Over the course of the program, participants completed 80 hours of industry-recognized training, including:
🚍 OSHA 10 General Industry Safety
❤️ American Red Cross CPR/First Aid
🚌 CTAA Passenger Assistance, Safety & Sensitivity
🚗 Defensive Driving
🤝 Conflict Resolution & De-escalation
🌍 Inclusivity Training
💻 Digital Literacy & Workplace Readiness

The celebration marked an exciting milestone—not only did all eight graduates successfully complete the program, but they also began their on-the-job training immediately as FlexRide and Ride Drivers with University Transit Service (UTS).

This cohort represents the fourth successful workforce partnership between Pipelines & Pathways and UTS, joining HOOS Driving, HOOS OnDemand, and HOOS FleetKeepers in creating innovative pathways to rewarding careers while helping meet critical workforce needs.

🚍 The Journey Begins! Welcome to the HOOS Driving Training Program! 🎉

On Monday, UVA Pipelines & Pathways and University Transit Service (UTS) officially welcomed our newest HOOS Driving cohort! These participants have begun their earn-while-you-learn journey toward becoming FlexRide and Ride Drivers while starting their careers as full-time, benefited University of Virginia employees. 💙🧡

Over the next two weeks, participants will complete an intensive training program designed to prepare them for success through:
✅ Workplace Readiness & Professional Development
✅ Computer & Digital Skills Training
✅ OSHA 10 General Industry Certification
✅ CPR/First Aid & AED Certification
✅ Defensive Driving & Passenger Assistance Training
✅ CTAA PASS Certification
✅ Conflict Resolution & De-escalation
✅ Public Speaking, Emotional Intelligence & Team Building
✅ Inclusivity & Customer Service Training

This exciting cohort was recruited through targeted community outreach, including our HOOS Driving Hiring Event at University Transit Service, a Pipelines & Pathways Pop-Up Recruitment Event at Virginia Career Works, community partnerships, and digital marketing efforts that connected job seekers with rewarding career opportunities at UVA.

We are excited to support these future drivers as they build new skills, earn industry-recognized certifications, and prepare to provide safe, reliable transportation services to the UVA community.

That’s a wrap! 🎉 Big congratulations to our amazing Workplace English Digital Literacy class graduates! 🎓 ✨

These dedicated UVA employees officially wrapped up their program today, and we couldn't be prouder of their hard work. Over the course of the class, participants gained incredible new skills to support their long-term career growth at the university, including:

💻 Navigating essential computer apps like Microsoft Word
🗣️ Learning English vocabulary specifically for the workplace and tech environments
