Transition tip: have your answer to "Tell me about yourself" ready before the interview.

It's usually the first question, and it sets the tone for everything after.

A simple structure that works for every branch:

1. Present: who you are now, in civilian terms.
"I'm a logistics and maintenance leader finishing 10 years in the Air Force."

2. Past: one or two highlights that matter for this role.
"I led a team of 15 and kept a fleet of vehicles mission-ready."

3. Future: why this job, at this company.
"I'm looking to bring that same reliability to your service operation."

Keep it under 90 seconds. Practice it out loud until it sounds like a conversation, not a briefing.

What's the toughest interview question you've been asked since leaving the service?

Veteran Workforce Solutions is headed to the Camp Lejeune Career Summit: Transportation & Logistics on Wednesday, October 21.

If your military experience has involved keeping people, equipment, vehicles, or supplies moving, we want to hear about it.

Fleet operations.
Maintenance.
Supply & logistics.
Material handling.
Diesel & equipment repair.
Technical troubleshooting.

Your MOS doesn’t always capture everything you know how to do.

Come meet VWS at Marston Pavilion and tell us about the experience behind the title.

Your experience. The right opportunity. We connect the two.

Transition tip: start earlier than you think you need to. ⏰

The service members we see land well usually do three things:

1. They start planning a year or more out, not in the last 90 days.
2. They ask their command about SkillBridge early. You can spend up to your final 180 days training with a civilian employer, but it takes approval and planning.
3. They learn to describe their job in civilian terms before the first interview, whether that's an MOS, a rating or an AFSC.

Your experience is already valuable. The goal is making sure an employer can see it.

Transition tip: your next job will most likely come from a conversation, not an application.

Networking can feel awkward at first. Think of it as gathering information about a new mission.

Here's a simple way to start:

1. Pick 5 companies you'd like to work for.
2. Find veterans who already work there. Search LinkedIn for the company name plus "veteran", or plus your branch.
3. Send a short note: "I'm transitioning from the Marine Corps and interested in operations roles at your company. Would you have 15 minutes to share how you made the move?"
4. Ask about their path, not for a job. People are generous with advice.
5. Follow up with a thank-you, and keep them updated as you go.

The veteran community looks out for its own.

Veterans who've already made the jump: who was the first person who helped you get your foot in the door?

10/13/2026

Transition tip: give your LinkedIn profile a tune-up before you start applying. đź’Ľ

Recruiters will look you up. Four quick fixes make a real difference:

âś… Headline: say where you're headed, not only where you've been. "Program Manager | U.S. Space Force Veteran" tells a recruiter more than your rank alone.

âś… About: three short paragraphs in plain civilian words. What you did, what you're great at, and the role you want next.

âś… Experience: lead with results and the size of the team, budget or equipment you were responsible for.

âś… Open to Work: turn it on and list the job titles and locations you're targeting.

Bonus: LinkedIn has offered a free year of Premium to eligible service members, veterans and military spouses. It's worth checking whether you qualify.

What's the hardest part of your profile to write? Tell us below. 👇

Where are you transitioning from? 🇺🇸

We work with service members from every branch, and we want to know where our community is.

Camp Lejeune. Fort Jackson. Seymour Johnson AFB. Naval Station Mayport. MCAS Beaufort. Fort Eisenhower. Robins AFB. Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. A Coast Guard station or a Space Force unit.

Drop your installation (or your last one) in the comments, along with your branch.

If you're getting out in the next year or so, now is a great time to start planning. Your experience counts, and our job is to help employers see it.

If you’re preparing for your transition, don’t just tell us your MOS or rating.

Tell us what you’ve worked on.
What you know how to troubleshoot.
What equipment you’ve maintained.
What responsibility you’ve carried.
And where you want to go next.

If your experience includes maintenance, heavy equipment, diesel systems, electrical systems, hydraulics, equipment repair, or technical troubleshooting, come find VWS.

Your military experience has value. Let’s talk about where it can take you.

Fort Campbell — we’re coming to you. 🇺🇸

Your MOS tells us where you served. It doesn’t always tell us everything you know how to do.

We will be at the Career Hiring Event on September 24th, connecting with transitioning service members and representing opportunities with Carolina Cat and LiftOne.

If you’ve spent your military career maintaining equipment, diagnosing problems, working with diesel systems, electrical systems, hydraulics, or keeping vehicles and equipment operational—we want to hear about it.

Come find us. Tell us what you’ve worked on, what you can do, and where you want to go next.

Your military experience has value. We help connect it to opportunity.

We’re especially interested in meeting transitioning service members with experience in heavy equipment, vehicle maintenance, diesel systems, electrical troubleshooting, hydraulics, and equipment repair.

Military job titles don’t always tell the full story. We want to understand the equipment you’ve worked on, the problems you know how to solve, and where you want to build your civilian career. Carolina Cat
