You landed the job, you’re clocking in, and you go to report your hard-earned wages... only to have the MySSA portal claim you have "No employers on record."

Talk about frustrating! But don't let it stress you out. This is a common backend glitch. Before you can report online, the Social Security Administration just needs to manually attach your employer to your file.

Remember: A system error isn't a stop sign—it’s just a prompt to leave a paper trail!

In our latest Advocations blog post, How to Get SSA to Add or Update an Employer, we walk you through:
🔹 The 3 quickest ways to update your record (Phone, In-Person, or Mail)
🔹 What to say to SSA representatives so you get the job done right
🔹 The exact paper trail you need to protect your benefits from overpayments

Think You Have to Use Your Trial Work Period All at Once? Think Again.

One of the biggest myths we hear about the Trial Work Period (TWP) is a relentless countdown clock. Many people believe that the moment you start a job, a 9-month timer begins ticking and runs out no matter what.

That is absolutely NOT how it works. We get it—hearing terms like "rolling 60-month period" sounds like confusing government jargon. Let’s break it down in plain English so you can stop worrying about the calendar and focus on your goals.

The 9-Punch Pass
Think of your 9 Trial Work months less like a ticking clock and more like a 9-punch pass to a movie theater or a coffee shop.

You control the punch: You only "use up" one of your 9 months if your gross earnings go over the official threshold. For 2026, that limit is $1,210 a month. If you earn less than that in a month, you don't use a punch.

They don’t have to be consecutive: Did you work for 4 months this year and then need to step back for health reasons? No problem. You only used 4 punches. You still have 5 left in your pocket for later.

You have plenty of time: You have a full 5 years (60 months) to use up those 9 punches.

Want the complete breakdown? If you want to dive deep into the exact math, rules, and exceptions of how the Social Security Administration tracks these months, click here to read our full, comprehensive guide to the Trial Work Period https://advocations.io/post/new-blog-post-9579

Why Does This Matter?
It means you have the freedom and flexibility to test the waters. If you try a new job and it doesn’t work out, or if your health fluctuates, you haven't "failed" or lost your safety net. The system allows you to pause. Your remaining months will be right there waiting for you whenever you are ready to try again.

Don’t let the fear of complicated government math keep you from earning a paycheck and pursuing your career goals.

We’ve Got Your Back!

Thinking about returning to work when you are on SSDI or SSI can bring up a lot of mixed feelings.

On the one hand, you want the extra income, the community, and the independence. On the other hand, there’s always that big, scary question looming in the background: “If I get a job, am I going to lose my monthly checks and my health insurance?”

We hear this from clients every single day, and we want to ease your mind: The short answer is no. The Social Security Administration actually built the Ticket to Work program to act as a safety net. It allows you to test out working without suddenly losing your benefits.

Even better? The income limits went up for 2026, meaning you can keep more of what you earn:
✅ For SSDI: You get a 9-month Trial Work Period where you can earn any amount and keep your full check. A month only counts toward your trial if you earn over $1,210 before taxes.
✅ For SSI: The system is math-mapped to guarantee you always make more money by working than by relying on SSI alone.
✅ For Healthcare: Your Medicare or Medicaid is safe. Starting a job doesn't mean your health coverage vanishes.

At Advocations, our job is to do the heavy lifting for you—from personalized benefits counseling (doing the math on your checks) to job placement with inclusive employers. And the best part?

Our services are 100% free to you. You don’t have to guess or gamble with your financial security. Let’s figure it out together.

Windfall or Downfall? Navigating Inheritance and SSI in 2026

If you or someone you advocate for receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a sudden inheritance can feel like a lifeline. But before you deposit that check, pause. For SSI beneficiaries, a sudden influx of cash can easily become an eligibility bomb.

At Advocations, we believe you are untapped talent, not a charity case. Part of empowering yourself is understanding the complex rules that govern your benefits so you don't get blindsided by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

[Insert Link: Read our full blog post guide here]

As we navigate 2026, the SSA has bumped monthly payment amounts, but the most dangerous traps—specifically regarding asset limits—remain completely unchanged. Here is our "A-Team" summary guide to handling an inheritance without torching your SSI eligibility.

The 2026 Landscape: What’s New (and What Isn’t)
Thanks to the recent 2.8% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), monthly SSI checks have seen a slight increase. However, the asset "cliff" remains frozen in time:

Individual Max Payment: ~$994/month

Individual Resource Limit: $2,000 (Unchanged)

Because that $2,000 resource cap hasn't budged, even a modest inheritance can immediately jeopardize your monthly benefits.

The "Income-First, Asset-Second" Trap
The SSA evaluates inheritance in a strict two-step sequence:

Month 1 (Income): The month you physically receive the inheritance, it counts entirely as income. This will almost certainly reduce your SSI check to $0 for that specific month.

Month 2 Onward (Asset): Whatever money is left over on the first day of the next month converts into a resource. If your total bank balance is over $2,000, you lose SSI eligibility entirely until you are back under the cap.

Warning: Do not simply refuse or "disclaim" the inheritance to avoid the problem. The SSA routinely views refusing funds as giving away assets, which can trigger a benefit penalty period of up to three years.

The A-Team Strategy: 3 Ways to Protect Your Benefits
You do not have to lose your safety net to keep your inheritance. Here are three approved vehicles to legally shelter those funds:

1. The Newly Expanded ABLE Account
A massive rule change took effect this year! Eligibility has officially expanded to individuals whose disability began before age 46 (up from age 26).

The Perk: Money in an ABLE account (up to $100,000) is completely exempt from the $2,000 SSI asset limit.

The 2026 Limit: The standard annual contribution limit has risen to $20,000.

2. Special Needs Trusts (SNT)
For larger inheritances, a trust remains the gold standard. A First-Party or Pooled SNT allows you to protect the cash while using it for approved quality-of-life expenses (like medical bills, travel, or education).

3. A Strategic "Spend Down"
If the inheritance is relatively small, you can legally spend the money down within the exact calendar month you receive it. This includes paying off existing debt, pre-paying rent, or buying an exempt primary vehicle. You must receive fair market value for everything—you cannot just give the cash to a friend to hold.

Don't Navigate the Red Tape Alone
You are legally required to report an inheritance to the SSA within 10 days of the end of the month in which you received it. Failing to report isn't a shortcut; it's a fast track to overpayment notices and benefit suspension.

Managing your benefits while trying to build a career and a thriving life is a full-time job. You don't have to guess your way through it. Whether you are looking to confidently step back into the workforce or just trying to survive the bureaucratic red tape, the A-Team is here to help you clear the hurdles.

Stop stressing over bad hires. It’s time to test the waters safely!

Let’s be real: Traditional hiring can feel like a massive gamble. You spend months interviewing, bet the farm on a candidate who looks perfect on paper, only to realize a few months later that the cultural fit just isn't there.

But there is a better way to find high-potential talent without the high stakes: Contingent Staffing.

At Advocations, we don't look at contingent roles as just "temp work." We see them as a strategic proving ground. It’s a game-changing approach that disrupts the status quo and gives an honest chance to the brilliant folks who are usually left in the dust by traditional hiring processes.

Here is why this strategy is an absolute win-win:

Low Risk, High Reward
It’s like dipping your toes in the water without fearing a shark bite. You get to see a candidate in action—handling real projects, navigating team dynamics, and delivering results—before making a long-term commitment. It’s the ultimate "try before you buy."

The VIP Pass for the "Underdogs"
This is where the magic happens. Contingent roles strip away the bias of the "perfect resume." Whether it’s a employment gap, a non-traditional background, or a disability that makes a standard interview process a barrier, this approach focuses entirely on ability. It gives amazing, qualified people the stage to show their chops.

A Safety Net with Serious Upside
When you take away the immediate pressure, you make room for incredible performance. Companies get a flexible, diverse workforce that can scale, and talent gets a golden opportunity to prove their value and transition into a permanent role.

Stop Betting. Start Testing.
Contingent staffing isn't a backup plan; it's a strategy for inclusivity and business agility. It opens doors for people who are hungry to prove themselves and ensures you aren't shooting blanks with your hiring decisions.
