Today we are celebrating founder of non profit organization

Girls Who Code aims to increase the number of women in computer science and close the gender employment difference in that field.

The organization works toward closing the gender employment difference in computing. They host a seven-week Summer Immersion Program, a two-week specialized Campus Program, after-school Clubs, a college club, College Loops and a New York Times best-selling Penguin 13-book series.

As of 2020, Girls Who Code has partnered with American Girl to create a doll who empowers girls to grow confidence and interest in technology. The doll, Courtney Moore, is an avid gamer who codes her own video game while dressed in 80's fashion. From September 2020 to December 2020, American Girl matched customer donations up to $50,000 to Girls Who Code.

This month Galore Creative Staffing will be celebrating creative women who have pioneered and blazed trails impacting others around the world!

Today we would like to recognize Morgan DeBaun Founder and CEO of Blavity Inc. Inc., the leading digital media company for Black culture and millennials.

DeBaun cofounded Blavity with Aaron Samuels and Jeff Nelson in 2014.

They started with a curated video newsletter and built a website, which was only the beginning. The site features content created by and for young black Americans, including subjects such as the Black Lives Matter movement and protests of the National Anthem.

Blavity has grown into a digital ecosystem with a monthly reach of over 100 million people and over 100 corporate partners per year.

Their portfolio of brands includes Blavity News, AFROTECH ,Travel Noire , Shadow and Act and Act, 21Ninety and Lunchtable.

Their conferences include Summit21 for Black women creators and AfroTech, the largest tech conference connecting a global community of 20,000+ Black tech innovators through a series of digital and in-person events.

In life we should always have a list of non-negotiables. Areas where we will not compromise. However, that should be the same in the workplace. A few could be praise and recognition, feedback, flexible work schedule, autonomy to do the job, or team-driven culture.

Stop saying you can’t find “Diverse” talent to fill your tech or creative roles.

Instead first check to see if your hiring process is fueled by unconcious bias via job description.

🎯Example: We are seeking a superb, guru, or rockstar who gets the job done. Language which lead to unintended male bias.

These terms will definitely deter females and underrepresented groups from applying, even if they have some of the required credentials.

Avoid skipping a resume because you can’t pronounce the candidate name👀 or perceive their ethnicity.

Resumes can be a potential source of unconcious bias and you could lose out on an opportunity to find the “perfect” candidate.

Here are 3 tips you can use to avoid unconcious bias hiring:

1. Rework your job descriptions- be sure to w**d out masculine language. Add words like collaborative or cooperative to draw men and women.

2. Standardize interview process- Use the same structured questions for each candidate that focus on factors that factors that directly impact job performance. Structured interviews minimize bias by taking out subjective factors

3. Create a diverse hiring committee- this team would be designated to review current hiring process to identify opportunities for improvement. They will point out blind spots (ex. a candidate May had a typo viewed as incompetent but actually could have dyslexia 🤔)

These are just a few brief tips that could help any hiring manager avoid unconcious bias , to be honest we alll have them🤷🏽‍♀️
