Q: How can “overqualified” job applicants keep from getting overlooked?
The midsection of America’s workforce is getting squeezed. Not accomplished enough for senior leadership roles but too experienced (and expensive) for the front-line positions artificial intelligence hasn’t replaced, many mid-career professionals suddenly find themselves in no man’s land. Callum Borchers looks at how some have navigated the job market.

A: When a job description calls for 10 to 15 years of experience, 25-year veterans aren’t necessarily seen as better-than-expected prospects. They’re often viewed as applicants who will ask for too much money and leave as soon as they find opportunities commensurate with their long CVs.

Veteran sales manager Anne Marie Sterling found that playing down her experience was a key to landing her current job at a solar-energy company. The 55-year-old Florida resident said she had to “play dumb.”

To be clear, this doesn’t mean coming across as unintelligent. In Sterling’s case, it meant balancing her decades of sales experience with the fact that she had never worked in the solar industry. The idea was to put to rest any worry that she might parade in like a know-it-all.

To reduce the odds of getting tossed out immediately, applicants should submit résumés that meet, but don’t vastly exceed, the listed requirements. Removing graduation years from the education section of your résumé is another way to fuzz up your career length.

This isn’t all about trying to appear younger, though it’s true that the “overqualified” label can be veiled age discrimination. Recruiters and hiring managers consistently say they are looking for depth, not length, on candidates’ résumés.

The government shutdown has done little to curb defense-contractor profits--at least not yet.

Big weapons suppliers like Lockheed Martin and RTX benefited from surging third-quarter demand for jet fighters, missile systems and other ammunition, prompting them to raise their 2025 profit and sales targets. Rival Northrop Grumman also boosted its adjusted profit target as executives said the U.S. government shutdown that started this month has yet to threaten the company’s bottom line.

“The demand is there, and we’re continuing to invest in capacity to ensure that that demand can be met,” RTX Chief Executive Chris Calio said Tuesday.

The defense industry’s bullish outlook reflects the growing pile of potential contracts that Defense Department officials have yet to issue. The Pentagon was already months behind schedule in doling out the roughly $150 billion in spending from the president’s massive budget-reconciliation law passed in July. The federal shutdown that started this month worsened those delays by making it harder for companies to reach Pentagon program officers, let alone sign new contracts.

Executives at larger defense contractors showed little sign of worry about the wait.

Northrop Chief Executive Kathy Warden said the company’s full-year projections already account for the Pentagon’s mounting delays in awarding some contracts. She said the company could manage even longer delays as long as the shutdown doesn’t stretch toward December.

“We are assuming that this only goes for a few more weeks, say, around mid-November,” Warden said. “If it goes beyond that, we may start to see some additional delays in getting funding on contract or even delays in receiving payment before year end.”
