How do you stand out when applying for jobs on LinkedIn?

You are going up against dozens, hundreds, and sometimes even thousands of applicants. You can NOT just click the easy apply button and be done.

If the job listing shows the hiring manager’s name, send them a message on LinkedIn and introduce yourself and let them know that you applied for the job and that you look forward to having a conversation to see if you would be a good fit.

If it doesn’t, use your Google skills and try to figure out who the hiring manager might be. If you’re able to find out who it is, send them an email with the same type of message.

If you know anyone that works for the company, absolutely use that to your advantage and ask for a referral.

Hiring is a very human game. Make sure you use a human approach!

Your resume is your ticket to securing interviews and landing your dream job. However, with hundreds of applications flooding recruiters' inboxes, how can you ensure that your resume doesn't get lost in the shuffle? The answer lies in understanding and optimizing for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

What Is an ATS, and Why Does It Matter?

Applicant Tracking Systems are the gatekeepers of the modern job application process. They are software programs used by employers and recruiters to manage the sheer volume of resumes they receive. ATS screens, sorts, and ranks incoming resumes based on specific criteria, ensuring that only the most relevant candidates make it to the interview stage.

Here's why ATS matters:

1. Efficient Screening: ATS helps employers quickly identify candidates who meet the basic qualifications for a job, streamlining the hiring process.

2. Consistency: It ensures a standardized and objective evaluation of resumes, reducing the potential for bias in the early stages of screening.

3. Time Savings: For employers, ATS saves time by automating the initial resume review, allowing recruiters to focus on interviewing and evaluating top candidates.

However, ATS can have unintended consequences.

If your resume is formatted in a different way than the system is expecting (ex. you use a Canva template), then it may not read your resume correctly, which may result in an auto-rejection of your application even if you meet all of the qualifications.

Also, if you are missing different keywords that the employer programmed into their system to search for, you may also be auto-rejected.

Employers don't have time to sort through hundreds (or sometimes thousands) of resumes, so using this type of software makes all of the sense in the world, but it still sucks for those negatively affected by the robot's inability to reason.

Use an ATS-friendly format (plenty of templates you can find through Google), and tailor your resume to the keywords in the job listing.

Yes, that means every job application you file should be unique. Yes, it is time-consuming. But you know what is more of a waste of time? Submitting generic applications to 100 companies and not hearing back from any.

How much does happiness cost?

An article by USAToday looks at this exact question. They found that while the cost of happiness varies from city to city, the amounts aren't nearly as different as you may think

Here are some takeaways:

The average American personal income is $37,638, and the average cost of happiness is $105,000—a staggering difference of $67,362.

The cheapest cost of happiness belongs to Knoxville, TN, with the price being $88,032. The average personal income in Knoxville is $29,277.

The most expensive cost of happiness belongs to Santa Barbara, CA, costing $162,741. The average personal income in Santa Barbara is $54,426.

The Harvard-affiliated study (https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/danielgilbert/files/if-money-doesnt-make-you-happy.nov-12-20101.pdf) also states that more money beyond the cost of happiness doesn't necessarily correlate with even more happiness.

Are you struggling to find a remote job?

Remote jobs are highly in demand, meaning you will face unprecedented competition when applying for them.

The attached screenshot shows that an administrative assistant role was posted 6 minutes ago on Linkedin and already has 247 applicants.

247 applicants. 6 Minutes.

How do you compete with that?

Well... you don't! At least not how everyone else is doing it.

1-click applications are not going to work for these types of positions. Even if you have the best qualifications, you are competing against way too many other applicants to make it worth your while.

Here's what to do instead:

1. Apply directly on the company's website with a tailored resume.

Do not apply through Linkedin and get lost among the crowd. Apply on the website directly and reformat your resume so that it includes the qualifications that are listed in the job posting. Be mindful to make it ATS-friendly
2. Submit a cover letterI

It is doubtful that any of the 247 applicants submitted a cover letter if they applied within 6 minutes of the job being posted. Even if they did, there is a good chance it is incredibly generic and isn't using the keywords from the job listing. Make your cover letter compelling and truthful while aligning your skills with the position.

3. Connect with the hiring manager on LinkedIn

If you can find the hiring manager's profile, send them a message to let them know that you've applied for the position and that you look forward to speaking with them to see if it is a good fit. Briefly highlight your qualifications and thank them for their time.

You can and will stand out from the vast majority of the competition by taking these extra steps. Even if you don't get that specific job, repeating these steps for every job application will dramatically increase your chances of getting hired.
