Today's Toolbox Talk Tuesday topic is... Summertime!
Summertime is enjoyable when you are at home or on vacation, but working hard in the summer heat may not be as fun. Summertime brings many hazards with it such as sunburn, heat illnesses, and insect bites just to name a few. This safety talk discusses some common summertime hazards and ways to protect yourself from injury and illness.
Protecting Yourself from Sun Exposure:
βοΈ Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts to help reduce the amount of skin exposed to the sun. Wear tightly woven clothing that offers UV protection when possible.
βοΈ Apply sunscreen according to manufacturer instructions before going outside, even when it is cloudy or cool. Understand the signs of heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and heat rash.
βοΈ Seek shade under a tree, shelter, or umbrella to reduce your total time in the sun.
Beat the Heat:
π€ Understand the signs of heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and heat rash.
π€ Monitor your body for signs you may be overheating, such as dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, and headaches.
π€ Avoid caffeinated beverages as they can contribute to dehydration. Instead, drink plenty of water throughout the day. The CDC recommends 8-10 glasses of water per day.
Bug Safety:
πͺ² Avoid scented soaps, perfumes, and colognes. The sweet smell attracts some types of insects.
πͺ² Avoid wearing bright-colored clothing. Bright colors may attract insects, such as bees.
πͺ² Wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants when possible to help cover more surface area of your skin.
Remember, safety starts with you!
