Today was dedicated "First Responders Day" in Michigan by our governor.

These men and women risk their physical and mental safety every day they work. For people they don't know and may never see again. Because they care. Because they have the desire to help. Because they want to make this world a better place. Because they are brave enough to endure what most won't.

While it's wonderful to have a day of recognition. Don't forget to show your appreciation the other 364 days of the year.

Little did I know just how much this job would change me as a person……….

From driven, optimistic, happy, outgoing, very social…….to the complete opposite.

Cynical, pessimistic, stressed, anxious, depressed, isolated, exhausted and loss of hope for the people and world around me…….

Asking for help is not only the most brave and courageous thing I’ve ever done……… but it is what set me on a journey of healing and recovery.

Today I am a much happier and optimistic person………. Instead of so harshly judging others and looking at things in only black and white…….. I have a much better understanding and view of the world around me.

Today I have absolute hope not just in myself, but in all of those around me. Know that you aren’t alone in your suffering……. So many of our Brothers and Sisters are suffering in silence.

Know you can get better and know you can return to a life better than ever before…….

Just ask for help!

It's National EMS appreciation week!

In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS professionals and the important work they do in our nation's communities.

Within the last 10 years, EMS has become a focus of intense research of pre-hospital interventions into many commonly encountered acute care issues seen in emergency medicine, such as acute respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, chest pain and more.

In 1862 Major Jonathan Letterman establishes US Ambulance Corps within the Army of the Potomac to triage wounded on active battlefields rather than retrieving them after battle ended. Based on its success saving lives, Ambulance Corps adopted throughout the Union Army. Letterman is considered the father of US EMS.

The Star of Life insignia used by EMS was designed by Leo R. Schwartz, chief of NHTSA’s EMS branch. It was adapted from the medical identification symbol of the American Medical Association, which was patented in 1967. The newly designed Star of Life was trademarked for EMS use on February 1, 1977.

Paramedics and EMTs are among the most ingenious and resourceful medical professionals. Because of limited budget amd in EMS, all of the needed resources aren’t always available. They are true medical MacGyver's.

It's National Police Officer appreciation week!

Some fun facts:

Michigan has roughly 17,000 full-time uniformed police officers who work for more than 600 state, county and local departments.

Although law enforcement agencies were organized in England in the 13th century, the first modern police officers operated in London starting in 1829.

All training academies are required to teach, as a minimum, the state's basic training curriculum, which is 594 hours in length. At the completion of the academy, all graduates are required to pass a licensing examination administered by the state.

19.7% of all law enforcement officers are women, while 80.3% are men.

It's International Firefighter appreciation day!

Did you know...?

Benjamin Franklin is responsible for the first fire company in Philadelphia. These firefighters were sometimes known as Benjamin Franklin’s Bucket Brigade. They would meet monthly to discuss different techniques to fight fires.

From 1603 until 1867, Japanese firefighters fought fires in a “different” kind of way. They wet themselves with hoses so they would be less flammable (causing their uniforms to weigh up to 75 pounds)

The estimated number of firefighters working in the U.S. is 1,115,000. Of that number, 370,000 are career firefighters and 745,000 are volunteers.

While firefighting is a significant part of their job, firefighters also play a vital role in providing medical aid, conducting rescue operations, educating the community about fire safety, and even assisting during natural disasters.

CISM/FiRST Team

The First Responder Support Team (FiRST) is dedicated to the First Responders of Tuscola County by offering defusings, debriefings, and one on one crisis responses to traumatic incidents within our county and our agencies. All members of the team are International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) trained and are coordinated under Jon Ramirez from the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office. The team has a diverse membership to include, law enforcement, fire, dispatch, as well as corrections personnel. Aside from the services we offer, we provide responders with resource information for professional psychological help, training, and literature of what to expect following a traumatic event.
