Have you heard the story of Marie Curie, the woman who discovered both Plolarium and Radium? Born in Warsaw, Poland under Russian occupation, Marie Curie was barred from higher education because she was a woman. In order to complete high school, she attended the "floating school", a secret organization that served to educate the Polish youth. With that accomplished, Marie Curie begins college at the Sorbonne School in Paris earning both a mathematics and physics degree.
Dedicating her life to science, her work with her husband (a professor at Sorbonne) produced some pretty amazing discoveries which led to them being given the 1903 Nobel Prize. Marie Curie was the first woman Laureate! She then was given a second Nobel Prize in 1911, making her the first (and still to this day the only) person to earn a Nobel Prize in two different sciences. Her work with Radium led to major medical inventions, such as radiology treatment for cancer! She worked to make advancements in science until she passed away from Bone Marrow Disease, which is now attributed to her exposure to radiation.
All in all, Marie Curie was a stellar scientist and an even more exemplary woman!
