Job search feeling stuck? You're not imagining it.

Marketplace calls it a "frozen" job market: few layoffs, but few new hires. Employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, unemployment rose to 4.2%, and 27.1% of unemployed Americans have been searching for six months or more.

A slow market rewards a sharper search. Three moves that help:
1️⃣ Target fewer roles that truly fit, and tailor every application
2️⃣ Lead your resume with measurable results
3️⃣ Work with a recruiter who hears about openings first

Fun Fact Friday

The first published computer program was written in 1843, about a century before the first electronic computers were switched on.

Its author was Ada Lovelace. While translating an article about Charles Babbage's proposed Analytical Engine, she added her own notes, which ended up longer than the article itself. In "Note G," she laid out step by step how the machine could calculate Bernoulli numbers. The machine was never built, but the logic held up.

She also imagined that machines like it might one day work with music and symbols, not just numbers. Sound familiar?

Next Tuesday, Oct. 13, is Ada Lovelace Day, which celebrates women in science, technology, engineering and math. Shout out a woman in STEM who inspires you 👇

Fun Fact Friday: Cybersecurity Awareness Month edition

In 1971, Bob Thomas, an engineer at BBN Technologies, wrote a program called Creeper that hopped between computers on ARPANET (the internet's ancestor) and printed a taunt on each screen:

"I'M THE CREEPER: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN"

It was a harmless experiment, but it's widely considered the first computer worm. The fix came soon after: Ray Tomlinson (the engineer who put the @ in email addresses) wrote Reaper, a program built to chase Creeper down and delete it. Many call it the first antivirus.

Fifty-five years later, the game of "catch me if you can" never stopped. It's why security analysts, cloud engineers, and IT pros are still some of the most in-demand people we recruit.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Tag the person on your team who's always one step ahead 👇

Fun Fact Friday: In 1947, Grace Hopper's team found a real moth stuck in Harvard's Mark II computer and taped it into the logbook: "First actual case of bug being found." The word "bug" was already tech slang, so the note was a joke. Tag a developer who's squashed a bug this week 👇

Job searching feels slow even with 7.3 million open jobs. Why? Hires fell to 5.1 million in July as employers got more selective. New on the blog: 6 ways to stand out this fall. Read it here:

Quick Answer: The job market isn’t broken, but it is slow. In July, there were 7.3 million open jobs and only 5.1 million hires, so employers are being selective. To stand out this fall: target a narrow set of roles, lead with quantified results, show real AI fluency, work with a recruiter who wil...

Job seekers, here's your late-September market check-in.

The economy:
• The Fed raised rates a quarter point last week to 3.75%–4.00%, its first hike since 2023, citing inflation that is still above target.
• August added 162,000 jobs, well above the prior 12-month average of 31,000 a month. Unemployment held at 4.1%, and wages are up 3.1% year over year.

The industry
• CompTIA projects U.S. tech employment to grow 1.9% in 2026 (about 185,500 new jobs) after a small dip in 2025, and more than 275,000 postings already call for AI-related skills.

What it means for you: this is a steady market, not a sizzling one. Employers are still hiring, but they're selective, and they reward specific, current skills over generic experience.

Three moves for this week:
1. Add 2–3 quantified wins to your resume
2. Name one AI tool or skill you actually use
3. Tell a recruiter exactly what you want next, so they can flag roles as they open
