How Temporary Paraprofessionals and Teachers Can Network Their Way to Permanent Opportunities
Working as a temporary paraprofessional or substitute teacher can feel uncertain — each assignment ends and you're back to waiting for the next call. But every day in a building is a networking opportunity, and the staff who treat it that way are the ones who land permanent positions.
Show up like you already work there.
Reliability and a positive attitude are noticed. Teachers, special education coordinators, and office staff all talk. Being the temp who goes above and beyond is the fastest way to get requested back — and eventually, recommended for ongoing openings.
Build genuine relationships.
Introduce yourself, remember names, and show real interest in the school's culture. A lead teacher or department head who likes working with you will advocate for you when a position opens up. Most schools prefer hiring someone they already know and trust.

Follow your district, engage with educators in your area, and keep your profile current.
Permanent positions are rarely won on applications alone. They're won on relationships built one assignment at a time.
