For 25 years, College Guild has connected people across prison walls through learning and human connection. This Maine-based nonprofit provides free correspondence courses to people who are incarcerated across the United States, creating opportunities to explore new subjects, reflect, and encounter different perspectives.
By being non-accredited, College Guild courses can be offered without educational prerequisites, making them available to people who may not qualify for other learning opportunities while incarcerated. And because the program operates entirely through the mail, participation does not depend on access to technology. Courses are provided at no cost to students, and more than 12,000 people have participated since College Guild was founded in 2001.
At the heart of the program is the connection between students and volunteer readers. Readers provide individualized written feedback that responds to students’ work and the ideas they choose to share. This personal connection adds another dimension to the learning experience: someone beyond prison walls is paying attention to their work and what they have to say.
More than 200 volunteer readers in Maine and across the country make College Guild’s work possible and help extend its reach to correctional facilities nationwide.
