Happy Anniversary MainSail Search Associates, Inc. ! Nine years ago today, I left a really great corporate role as the Head of Global Executive Search to start my own business. I had a vague idea of what I was doing, I didn’t have any clients, but I was willing to bet on myself.

I surrounded myself with amazing mentors; some were going out on their own too, so we learned and grew with each other.

The one thing I promised myself is that I would always, always follow up with each and every client and candidate. I would over communicate, if necessary. I would never “ghost” or leave anyone hanging. Over the past 9 years, MainSail Search Associates, Inc. has taken over some searches from industry/specialized search firms, some large, some boutique. In many cases they sent big bills without anything to show for it. That is not how we operate. Our goal is to complete searches as quickly and efficiently as possible so we can continue to partner with and take on more from our clients. We know these roles are important to your businesses, and we are here for you. A successful executive search = clarity + access + assessment + alignment + follow-through. Executive search only really works when both the search firm and the client operate at this level of engagement. If either side slips, the whole process weakens. This is the part people often underestimate.

MainSail Search Associates, Inc. has spoken to several folks recently that have been looking for their next opportunity for over a year or more or they were recently laid off. In addition to talking to them, helping with their resumes/profiles and introducing them to my network,,,I thought the following interview tips would be helpful too.

When an interviewer asks if you have any questions,,,you should always be prepared!! I can’t emphasize that enough. Here are a few of my favorite follow up questions that, in my experience, will set you apart.

* After you hire me, in a year, what kind of metrics would let me know I’ve done a good job?

This question does a lot. It makes them think they have hired you, you get detailed expectations of the job and it shows you are open to feedback on ways to improve.

* When you were interviewing here, what would you have liked to know before you joined?

* If I started in this position right away, what is the single biggest contribution I could make in my first couple of weeks?

* Can you tell me about the team that I would be working/partnering with?

Getting intel before you start is always a good move.

Don’t ever waste an opportunity to ask questions at the end of an interview. It’s the best chance to find out if the role is the right fit.
