Since the Loft Sessions Method focuses on a classical approach to pop music, we thought it would be appropriate to celebrate the birthdays of two influential musicians today-- Franz Peter Schubert and Justin Timberlake.

After teaching the kids about Schubert's upbringing, influences, and how he managed to compose over 1000 pieces in his 31 short years, we played them a recording of Ave Maria and they all seemed pretty blown away. The rest of the class was spent focusing on rhythms, and learning Can't Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake (which we will be performing for final concert at the end of the semester).

One year ago today!

I think they were pretty excited to get their violins today.

The theme today was "collaboration"! We talked about collaborations between classical composers and then started teaching them "Something Just Like This" by Coldplay and the Chainsmokers. We then asked them who they would choose to collaborate with if they could choose any musician in the world! Most of them chose Michael Jackson, which was a pleasant surprise to the teachers!

There's nothing better than seeing the excitement in each of our students as they pick up an instrument for the first time and learn new ways to express themselves.

One year ago today!

What a group!

Today we learned about women in music--in honor of Clara Schumann's birthday we spoke about the importance of female creatives and female musicians on the radio today. The rest of the class was spent learning how to improvise and our students absolutely killed it.

We can't wait for class next Wednesday!

Back at Page Academy for our first Loft Sessions Method class of the year! Thrilled to start our second session at Page and so excited to see their progress over the next 10 months. We have some new faculty joining us this year, some phenomenal guest artists lined up, and some awesome new repertoire that the kids will be performing :)

Thanks for a fun and successful school year!

Last week we wrapped up our 17-week intensive music program with our final performance at Page Academy! Our students range between the ages of 3 and 11 and choose the instrument they want to learn when they enroll. Each week our students team up with instructors in a project-based learning environment where they're taught a "Classical Approach to Pop Music" and how to listen and collaborate within a musical setting.

We can't wait to see these talented young musicians again next year and continue to bring quality music education to the Los Angeles area!

Just another day in class...

In preparation for the final concert, our students at Page Academy broke into their weekly sectionals and quickly got to work on the pieces they'll be learning.

With a bit of extra time left in class, we were joined by Mozart himself! Wig intact, Mozart gave our students a glimpse into his life and conducted a few of his most popular pieces, performed by our wonderful house string trio.
