I have immediate needs for Relief Counselors at a woman’s shelter. The position is located on Albany Street in Boston. The hours are 3pm - 11pm and includes weekend coverage. The primary role of the Counselor is to assist the guests of the shelter in accessing the services we provide, particularly those relating to food, clothing, medical care, and referral needs. The incumbent will aid in ensuring a safe and secure environment for guests and staff and intervene with any issues dealing with substance abuse. The Counselor will take initiative with guests regarding educational issues and opportunities, including appropriately informing them about issues relating to AIDS, STD and HIV prevention. The incumbent will also assess guests’ needs and assets in order to make appropriate transitional and housing referrals. Ability to lift 25 lbs. Ability to walk several flights of stairs. Requires frequent bending, lifting, stretching, stooping. Requires, at times, lifting of guests with assistance. Takes responsibility for orienting new guests, obtaining information and explaining the policies of the shelter. Takes responsibility to refer guests to other agencies when necessary. Takes responsibility for the security and safety of guests in various areas of the building, i.e., dorms, lobby, park, etc. Supervises meal operations. Accepts appropriate referrals from Boston Police, hospitals, and various other agencies. Does runs to local hospitals to pick up or drop off guests. Documents important information about guests in the log. Interviews all new guests and pools other sources of information to ensure that guests in need of services are provided for. Provides support for co-workers in the development of a team approach to program responsibilities. Performs any task deemed necessary by the supervisor in the fulfillment of the overall responsibility of the program.
QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or GED & Valid Massachusetts driver’s license in good standing. Preferred Bilingual English/Spanish. Help to be CPR Certification. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in Human Services. Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Basic computer skills.
