Why are global shipbuilders looking at the Gulf Coast?

Take a drive from Pascagoula through Mobile and into Northwest Florida, and the answer starts to become pretty clear.

This region already knows how to build ships.

And international shipbuilders are paying attention.

South Korea's Hanwha recently made an offer valued at up to $1.2 billion for Austal's U.S. operations, which include its major shipbuilding operation in Mobile.

Earlier this year, a Japanese government and industry delegation traveled to Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi to visit shipyards and meet with government and industry leaders about expanding U.S. shipbuilding capacity.

These are not isolated events.

The Gulf Coast has something that is difficult to build from scratch: an industrial ecosystem.
