ROCKLAND, Maine — The 295-foot Coast Guard cutter Eagle is scheduled to make a port stop in Rockland at 3 p.m. Friday as part of its summer training voyage for cadets. It also will open its ship to the public over the weekend.

The ship will be open for public tours 1 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Sunday. The vessel will be docked at the Coast Guard station at the end of Tillson Avenue.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that the Eagle is the largest tall ship in the United States and the only active square-rigged ship in U.S. government services.

The vessel was built in 1936 in Germany but was taken by the United States as reparations after World War II.

The Eagle has served as a classroom at sea for future Coast Guard officers since 1946, according to the Coast Guard. There are 135 cadets aboard the Eagle. There is a permanent crew of eight officers and 50 enlisted personnel who maintain the vessel.

The Eagle will be deployed this summer for 13 weeks with nine port calls spanning four countries.

At Pets for Vets, we believe our country owes military veterans a debt of gratitude. Thanks to all the cadets who came out to volunteer and get soaked. "Madman" Coffey took 2nd place men's/age group, Mackey helping him look good by coming in 3rd. Lots of crew there, awesome BBQ...making up for the rainy weather. Great way to celebrate Michael Murphy's birthday (which was yesterday).

Another rainy finish line like last y year. Two cadets running, four more volunteering!
