Three trails that’ll wreck your legs and rebuild your soul:

1️⃣ Gulf Hagas — the “Grand Canyon of Maine.” A slate gorge buried deep in the 100-Mile Wilderness, waterfall after waterfall the whole way down. ~8-mile loop, worth every step.

2️⃣ Katahdin — Maine’s highest peak and the northern finish line of the Appalachian Trail. Take the Knife Edge if your nerves can handle a ridge that falls away on both sides.

What actually is “seasonal work”? 🍍

Seasonal work is a job tied to a place’s busy season. Ski resorts staff up all winter. National parks, guest ranches, and adventure outfitters run hot all summer. Beach towns, island resorts, dude ranches, fishing lodges — they all need crews when the crowds show up, then wind down when the season ends.

Here’s the part nobody tells you: most of these jobs come with housing. Sometimes meals. Sometimes a ski pass or park access thrown in. So instead of paying rent in a city you’re tired of, you’re living in Yellowstone, on a mountain in Vail, or on a beach in the Virgin Islands — and getting paid for it.

You work a season (usually 3–6 months), stack some cash, live somewhere unreal, then move on to the next one. Winters in the snow, summers in the parks. Repeat as long as you want.

It’s not a gap-year thing or a “figuring it out” thing. People build entire lives this way — I’ve been doing it for a decade. Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sun Valley, Alaska, the USVI. No lease, no cubicle, no routine.

Everyone told me to get a real job. So I got two a year.

I spent one whole summer in Yellowstone — geysers out the back door, elk in the parking lot, a paycheck and a bunk that came with the gig. When the season ended, I didn’t go home. I hit the road, chased a few weeks of nowhere-to-be, then landed in a mountain town for winter and did it all over again with snow on the ground.

That’s what seasonal work actually is. Resorts, national parks, ranches, and adventure towns hire in waves — a big crew for the busy season, then everyone scatters. You work hard for a few months in a place most people only see on vacation. Housing’s usually part of the deal, so your expenses stay low and your savings don’t. Then the season closes, your time is your own, and you decide where the next one takes you.

Summer in one place. Travel in between. Winter somewhere new. Repeat.

Here’s what nobody tells you: you’re not falling behind. You’re stacking up the kind of summers and winters most people ration out two weeks at a time — paid, housed, and surrounded by people who chose the same escape.
