Even though the concert I’ve been waiting on alllll winter got canceled… this right here made the entire trip worth it.

I ended up visiting Kingsley Plantation on Fort George Island, and it was powerful in a way I didn’t expect. Peaceful. Reflective. Heavy… but grounding.

You walk through the main house, the kitchen house, the barn, the gardens — and then you stand among the remaining slave cabins. Out of the original 32 cabins, 23 still stand. You can literally walk inside them. Some restored, some weathered by time. And even in the ruins, you see resilience. Craftsmanship. Survival.

It’s part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, and the history hits differently when you’re actually there.

If you’re ever in Jacksonville — or even Orlando (it’s about a 2-hour drive and absolutely worth it) — go.

You do have to drive down a dirt road to get there (yes, I was nervous at first), but once you arrive? It’s amazing.
