A job well done to the members of the Local 1926 / Annapolis Fire Department who made history today by administering whole blood to a critically injured trauma patient for the first time.
Faced with a serious and rapidly evolving emergency, our firefighters and paramedics relied on their training, experience, and sound decision-making to recognize the patient’s needs and take immediate action. Because whole blood was available and our crews were prepared to use it, lifesaving treatment began within minutes of patient contact rather than waiting for arrival at a trauma center or the arrival of an air medical crew.
This incident highlights exactly why programs like prehospital blood administration matter. The quick actions of our members helped stabilize a patient suffering from traumatic injuries and changed what could have been a much different outcome before the Maryland State Police helicopter even arrived on scene.
We are incredibly proud of the professionalism, dedication, and commitment to excellence displayed by our members. Their willingness to embrace advanced training and cutting-edge patient care continues to make a difference when seconds count and lives hang in the balance.
Outstanding work by everyone involved.
