Hear the words from our Team Chaplin, Joey Hawkins.

What can they do to me?
Be merciful to me, my God,
for my enemies are in hot pursuit;
all day long they press their attack.
My adversaries pursue me all day long;
in their pride many are attacking me.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust and am not afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalm 56:1-4 (NIV)

Psalm 56 is a fascinating one. If you read the title of the Psalm, it tells us it was written by David “when the Philistines seized him in Gath.” The record of that is found in 1 Samuel 20. David had been on the run from King Saul, viewed as a threat to his reign. So he flees to the enemy of Israel, the Philistines, the same people that the famous giant Goliath was from. When Achish the King of Gath discovers this, David realizes he is in great danger. So it says in 1 Samuel 21:13 (ESV) “ So he (David) changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard.” David literally has to feign insanity in order to save his own life. In a humorous moment when David is brought before King Achish, Achish states (my paraphrase) “Why do I need David? I’ve got plenty of crazy people around me already!”

This is the context then of David’s words, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” He had every reason to fear, on the run from his own countrymen and now discovered by the King of his enemies. Rarely do we face such threats to our safety, yet if your mind is anything like mind, it’s always trying to convince me of the fears and threats all around me. David reminds you and I that God is the source of our trust. First, because God’s word is the only word that can speak truth and remind us of our place. That is why it is worthy of praise, it is the words holy, just and true. And second, because God is the only one with ultimate trustworthiness. Human beings will always disappoint to one degree or another but God’s word and character stands in all circumstances. No one can threaten that or take that away.

So when you face the troubles of life this week, no matter what they may be, remember to place your faith and trust in God and seek after him. Then you can say with David “What can mere mortals do to me?”

Hear the words from our Team Chaplin - Joey Hawkins.

Today I’m going to keep it short: John 3:17, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

If your only interaction with religion has led you to feeling condemned, I’m here to tell you something: that’s not Jesus. Does Jesus judge and call out sin? Absolutely. But he doesn’t LEAVE you there. In Christ, there is no condemnation, because he carried the cost and weight of your sins. When we repent, place our faith in Christ, confess our sins and step into new life in baptism God’s grace, love and mercy belong to us. Anyone who tells you differently isn’t preaching the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ.

I pray you have a blessed week and continue to grow in the grace and strength of Christ Jesus!

According to Yahoo Finance, nearly 90% of job applicants face rejection due to their resumes. Many qualified candidates miss out on opportunities because their resumes fail to effectively showcase their experience and value. Common issues include:

- Skills not highlighted properly
- Irrelevant skills that distract from the position
- Using the same resume for every job application instead of tailoring it to the role
- Lack of measurable accomplishments and results
- Poor formatting that makes resumes difficult to read

Your resume is often the first impression you make with an employer. A strong resume should clearly communicate your skills, experience, and why you are the right fit for the position you are applying for.

At Heartland Recruiting, we believe great candidates deserve great opportunities, and sometimes a few resume changes can make all the difference. If you would like resume feedback or suggestions, send your resume to Steven at [email protected].

Three Words from Romans

“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” Romans 15:5-7

Endurance: “The ability to withstand hardship or adversity” (all definitions taken from the Merriam-Webster dictionary) Endurance is a word Paul uses multiple times in the book of Romans, but here he does something unique and uses endurance as a descriptor of God himself. God is the source of endurance, the one who provides us help us to make it through the hardships and adversity of life. And God provides encouragement as the positive source for us to endure. Hebrews 10:26 “For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.”

Harmony: “A pleasing arrangement of parts; The combination of simultaneous musical notes in a chord.” Paul uses both meanings here in this passage. First, that the endurance and encouragement God provides would help the people to harmonize together as one, experiencing that unity that comes from seeking God together. Second, that their voices would both literally and figuratively be joined together in harmony. The picture is one of praising God though song, but it also carries the deeper meaning of God’s people speaking and acting together. This isn’t because of forced conformity, but rather the image of a song coming together in all its parts just as we come together as one. Colossians 3:14 “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Welcome: “To accept with pleasure the occurrence or presence of.” I am sure you have heard of the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” Paul takes that rule and expands it as we see elsewhere in the Bible: treat others the same way God treats us. Because of the life, death, resurrection, and reign of Jesus, we have been welcomed into God’s family, our sins not counted against us, and our place is fully secure as his sons and daughters. And for that reason, we welcome and show hospitality to others because God wants those same things for each human being. 1 Peter 4:9 “Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

I pray you have a blessed week and continue to grow in the grace and strength of Christ Jesus! ~ Joey

The Spirit of the Law

Have you ever broken a law? I’m not asking you to confess to any crimes here, but if we are being honest, most of us would admit that we break at least some small law or statute regularly (cough, cough *the speed limit*). And that’s just the laws that we would be aware of! In the Old Testament of the Bible, most scholars agree that there are 613 commandments, of which there are 248 positive commandments ("do's") and 365 negative commandments ("do not's").

At first blush that seems like a whole lot of rules. But let’s just take a moment and look at the laws of the state I reside in, Illinois. As of 2019, there were approximately 259,832 restrictions in place in the state. But that number has only gone up, in 2025 over 460 laws were passed and at the beginning of 2026 almost 400 new laws went into effect in the state.

Keeping 259,832 rules feels a bit impossible, even if you are the most rule-following type. But at the heart of all those regulations, the issue is truly a moral one: people figure out new and creative ways to break the law. That point is central to the argument Paul lays out in the book of Romans. I’ll share a longer passage than I usually do, but Romans 8:1-5 says,

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Paul refers to those in Christ as being under the “law of the Spirit of life” instead of the “law of sin and death.” I don’t want to get all theological on you, but the issue Paul is getting at is that sin seized an opportunity through the law because we all break it, it became “weakened by the flesh.” But Jesus comes, fulfills the law by keeping all 613 of God’s commandments, which destroyed the power of sin and then through him, all the benefits of his life, death and resurrection come to those who are in Jesus Christ. We do not become perfect, we come under the authority of the one who is. That allows us to walk by the Spirit and live free of the eternal consequences of our own sin.

That is the good news, the gospel of Jesus in a nutshell! I pray you have a blessed week and continue to grow in the grace and strength of Christ Jesus!
